SHAUN DRAUGHN
5-11/213
North Carolina Senior
40: 4.75

PROS:

Patient runner with good burst to and through hole. Does a nice job as a one-cut runner, following his blocks. Has decent straight-line speed and can sometimes get outside and make the big play. Shows some shiftiness to juke defenders on the second level. Flashes some power and strength as a runner, able to deliver blow to the defender. Fights for extra yards and keeps feet moving after contact. Has good hands and can adjust to the throw and make the grab in traffic. Comfortable lining up in the slot.

CONS:

Runs a bit too upribght and doesn't have the power to break many tackles. Doesn't always show great balance as a runner, struggles to get yards after contact when defenders are around his ankles. Can be too patient as a runner at times. Lacks ideal burst out of his cuts and won't make too many guys miss. Doesn't have great speed to consistently get outside or make plays on the second level. Dances too much at times.

OVERVIEW:

Draughn has decent size/speed combination, that his best asset is his potential in the passing game. He had begun to emerge at the end of his sophomor eyear, and was off to a strong start as a junior before a broken shoulder blade sidelined. In 9 games that year, he had 124 carries for 567 yards (4.6 avg), 1 touchdown, and 21 receptions. He came back this year, and was more of a role player as a senior. He finished year with 129 carries for 637 yards (4.9 avg), 6 touchdowns, and 13 receptions. His best season was his sophomore year where he had 198-866-4.4-3-16. He played some safety as a freshman.

NFL FORECAST:

Draughn is going to be hard-pressed to carve a significant role in the NFL. He has enough size, burst, and power to be a decent reserve option in the right offense. Behind a good zone-blocking line, he could be decent. I would make a comparison to a Ryan Moats, which is good enough to be a No. 3 back, but if you are relying on him to take a significant portion of the carries, you're in trouble. His best asset is as a receiver, which is similar to Moats. If he can improve in pass protection, he does offer some limited value there because he has good hands and looks natural at times catching the ball. The problem is that Draughn isn't going to be a playmaker, and one wonders with his upright style of running will he be durable at the next level. If he can produce on special teams, he will increase his chances of making an NFL roster. But at this point, he looks more like a journeyman/practice squad type, that will struggle to stick because there are players with more upside as a runner.

ATL FORECAST:

Draughn could compete for a role in Atlanta, but unless he can produce early on specail teams and/or show some ability as a receiver out of the backfield, then he has limited upside and won't be anything more than a practice squad candidate. A year there, he could push for the No. 3 role, but he doesn't really offer anything the Falcons really want at the position. Since he lacks the power/durability to be a replacement option for Turner. And he doesn't have the speed to be a change of pace runner. He's more of a camp body.

VALUE:

Draughn isn't worth drafting, but he could potentially add depth down the road as an undrafted free agent.
