The other guys review

Postby DaveWaz » Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:10 pm

Well I just got back from watching "the other guys" starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. I'm a big fan of both and had high expectations for this film, but it was not that good. Marky mark is a good actor but can't do comedy (or at least without the funky bunch). I thought they would use him as a straight man opposite Ferrell, but instead they tried to make him comical as well and it was a catastrophic failure. You could literally seem him smiling at times while trying to deliver funny lines in a dead pan style. The script in this movie was weak but not unbearable, little time was spent developing characters to care about. In addition the ending was weak and slow. There were some lol moments and some great Will Ferrell one liners, but in the end I was disappointed. I wouldn't advise seeing this in the theater, but I wouldn't mind cathing it again on HBO or Showtime. My buddy saw this while being high and liked it, maybe that would help anyways,

My grade 5/10 stars

It's been about 5 years since Will F. has had a good movie. Last one was the Anchorman. IMHO.

anchorman was my favorite and there have been a bunch of stinkers since then, but I did enjoy Talladega nights and Step Brothers

DaveWaz, I'm in the same boat. I loved Anchorman and Talladega Nights, and liked Step Brothers. But I couldn't really get into this movie. I was expected a bit more from this, a bit more seriousness but it wound up being Anchorman with cops. It was nonsensical, and had real actors trying to do comedy, and it just didn't work. There were only 3 comedians in this movie: Ferrell, Damon Wayans Jr., and Rob Riggle. And they didn't give Damon Jr. and Riggle enough to do.

I could buy the ridiculousness of Anchorman, because it was their first movie, set in the 70s with a goofy news crew, and had funny people delivering all the lines. But I couldn't buy the ridiculousness of this movie. It's a modern movie set in NYC with cops, and I just couldn't go with it. There were parts I laughed at, but for the most part I was pretty bored and almost walked out. The plot is about as well thought out as Anchorman's plot. It makes no sense. If it was trying to be a smart movie and satirize corporate crime, it failed miserably.

If you want to see a funny buddy cop movie, stick with Hot Fuzz.

I liked Ferrell in a movie where he was in competition with John ?? as ice skaters. The name escapes me but other than that movie and Anchorman I didn't like any other Ferrell movie. His type of humor gets old fast so I am always leery of a Ferrell movie.

Ferrell just rarely cuts it as a leading man to me, however, I did like Stranger than Fiction a good bit which was sort of a departure for him. He was funny in Super Star. Elf made me want to choke him.

Yeah, Stranger than Fiction was a fairly good film. If you think about it, his character in that movie and The Other Guys are essentially the same.
