Jamar Chaney - LB - Mississippi State Height: 6'1 Weight: 241 40 Time: 4.60 Projected: 4th
Positives:
- Very experienced, 4 year starter - Very athletic - Great size - Fast and agile - Sideline to sideline range - Great acceleration - Good instincts, recognizes plays well and doesn't bite on play fakes - Good at reading the QB's eyes - Makes plays in coverage - Changes directions well - Takes good angles to the ball carrier - Flows well down the LOS - Works well in space - Solid open field tackler - Breaks down well - Good at finding open gaps on blitzes - Can play inside and out, was originally a WLB - Consistent player - Senior Bowl defensive MVP - Will contribute on special teams - Vocal leader
Negatives:
- Struggles to get off blocks - Needs to be more aggressive, lets the OL block him and push him back - Serious doubts about his ability to play MLB in the NFL - Won't generate any big hits - Not much of a playmaker - Could get a better drop in zone without turning his hips - Won't be an effective 1 on 1 blitzer - Broke his leg in 2008
Overview:
Jamar Chaney is a very underrated player. He is athletic, but unlike most athletic LB's he has great size. He is at his best in space and making plays in coverage. He has great instincts and is a sure tackler. He will struggle against the run at the next level. If he we're moved outside to WLB this wouldn't be a problem but he will get pushed around by guards in the NFL if he lined up at MLB. He cannot shed blocks and the only way he avoids them are with his quickness. I still think he is a really good player, but will have to move back to his more natural position at WLB.
