Thanks for rekindling the thread BB. I think it was Ben Webster ,may have been Lester Young used to battle Coleman Hawkins in clubs to see who could out do each other sort of like Jordan vs Lebron or Kobe,haha. Why don't we throw Sidney Becht in since were going way back,haha.

I'll check it out little later thanks BB. I have a friend named Matt Wilson playing at the Village Vanguard now. He was the drummer in our college band way back.He's playing with Lee Konitz now and as played with Joe Lovano,Phil Woods and some other heavy weights.

I listened to the concert BB.It was nice to have a tribute for Golson and hear his compositions.Jeff Clayton teaches lessons out in Los Angeles and obviously plays alot.He really makes his sax students practice alot and instead of one on one practice he as all the students come and critique the lesson. This puts pressure on the sax student to not look foolish in front of his peers and Clayton really works the student to get better which is good.

Now if we could get a tribute for Phil Woods I would rest in peace. Phil is getting up in age and might not be around to much longer.It's to bad the public really doesn't know of the great jazz players still living at least the general common person. I always have to chuckle when a rapper all he as to do is come up with some poetry lines over a beat and the public loves it while a jazz player needs to know a million times more and doesn't get half the credit. The rapper lives in the penthouse the jazz player in the out house.

Hmm I never heard of Fred Anderson however that doesn't mean alot. Towns are filled with high quality musicians no one as ever heard of outside the area.Phil Woods the legendary saxophonist said about a teenage phenom don't talk about him till he's played into his 6o's or 70's to stand the test of time. There are many flash in the pans but few who go through the ups and downs of a jazz musician's life.Fred certainly stood the test of time. Hats off to Fred doing what he loved. Must be some jam session with Trane,Adderley,Brecker,Desmond,Parker and now Fred Anderson in the next life.
