Our Punter

I must eat a little crow and say that he had a great game... I hazed him last week, but yesterday was a different story. Good, solid punts... nice, deep kickoffs... he was pretty much the MVP of the game for us (which is sad).

Koenen will be a great punter in the NFL. Especially with the amount of air he gets under his punts. Not only that he can punt for distance too. I think he had three inside the 20 and two inside the ten yesterday.

A lot of Seahawk fans were impressed with his punting ability. Of course Seattle's punter is horrible.

Koenen, once he has a little more time to establish a bit more consistancy should be our punter for many years.

He did kick the hell out of the ball a couple of times, I was very pleased with his performance, especially after a lack luster performance against the Iggles.

I think the Iggles problems were nerves. First big game in the NFL & all, hopefully Jenkins recovers like this guy did.

I have to admit that i think he had a good game. I was very concerned with him, but having seen his performance these last two games, i am becoming impressed.

The last punt he did yesterday, if my memory is correct, the Falcons were deep on their side and he boomed a long low slow kick to about the Seahawks 20? I was thinking they were going to get the ball around the 40 and it just soared clear across the field.

wasn't it something like 60-65 yards. I may have heard it wrong but I think that is what the announcers said.

Koenen on Sunday:

7 Punts, 49.6 Average, 2 Inside 20, Long of 67 Yards

Including this week Koenen is 9th in the NFL for average yards per punt.

#1: Kluwe, 51
#2: Lechler, 46.7
#3: Miller, 46.5
#4: Bidwell, 46.5
#5: Player, 45.4
#6: Hentrich, 45.1
#7: Hanson, 45
#8: Sauerbrun, 45
#9: Koenen, 44.9 (lead the NFL in pre-season)

With exception to Kluwe, Koenen, is just 2.2 yards behind the top punters. I think he's #2 for net yardage.

Sidenote: Late in the game when we were down a field goal the Falcons were warming up Koenen for a long field goal attempt. It appears when we are between 40 and 50 yards in range Koenen will attempt the field goals thanks to Petersons range wall.

Koenen punted better, but I want to see him get a bit more hangtime and more direction on his punts. He didn't get many opportunities this past week, since most of the times he punted we were pretty deep in our own territory (and in those cases distance is best).

Koenen hasn't blown me away, but he's a rookie punter. I'll give him time. If the Seahawk game is going to be his usual performance, I'll be happy with that.
