I need to start saying some hail mary's because we are officially knee deep in crap. We have two quality starters and nothing in the nickel and dime portions of our secondary.

Me thinks DeMo is going to see more work in the nickel and dime formations then he bargained for.

I think they will have to sign someone, because if memory serves me we don't have a CB on the practice squad.

This is a huge blow to our defense. We need Jonte' Buhl back now. Buhl is very green, and will likely get burned, but I'm a bit more confident in him than I am in Rossum or this Torrence guy. Some veterans available are:

Ashley Ambrose
Kris Richard
Pete Hunter
Artrell Hawkins
Bruce Thornton
Chris Cash
Todd McMillon
Jimmy Williams
Mario Edwards
Christian Morton
Robert Tate
Kevin Garrett

All have experience being a #3 or #4 cornerback.

Thanks for the list Pudge. Pretty slim pickings there though. Ambrose is the only name I recognize and he is washed up. (Cut by KC, I believe and that is saying something!)

Well you should recognize Morton since he played with us last year! :P

UGA fans should recognize Thornton. Hunter, Hawkins, Cash, and Edwards at some point or another in their careers have been starters. Williams, Tate, and Richard have seen more time on special teams than on defense in their careers.

IMO the best options on that list are Edwards, Cash, and Hawkins. Mario Edwards was a starter in Dallas just two years ago. He might be fading into the sunset but he's still better then Rossum.

Falcons place Mathis on IR, sign Morton
September 15, 2005

The Atlanta Falcons announced today the signing of CB Christian Morton to the active roster and the placement of CB Kevin Mathis on Injured Reserve.

Morton, 6-0, 180 pounds, spent training camp with the Falcons before being released on August 26.

In 2004, Morton played in two games for the Falcons and tallied two tackles. He was signed off of the Washington Redskins practice squad.

Mathis, a nine-year veteran, was placed on Injured Reserve with a knee injury sustained in practice yesterday.

Anyone know how much experience he has and how odl he is?

I found these, http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/christian_morton & http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/footba ... 43356.html

Not much help.....but still. He's young, only 24.

I personally would have rather signed Buhl. He at least made it through our first round of cuts.

Morton had his moments last year. I don't recall him getting burned in the few instances he got on the field, but then again he didn't really make any plays either. He has talent, and if he can hit the ground running, we could at least salvage this position.

All I remember about Morton was him gettin burnt by Greg Lewis in the playoffs...

It sounds to me like this is a temporary solution because he knows the system, as opposed to something permenant. I think we will bring in someone else during the course of this season...

Where is Beasley at? Is he even still playing? He isn't stellar by any means but if we could get him I think that would be a better answer than Morton.

The last news story I can find on Beasley is from June 24th when the Chiefs were looking at him. He's still an FA I'm fairly sure of it. He has no team listed on his profile under NFL.com.

If this team signed Beasley, it would need to be as a FS. He's not a corner anymore. He can only play in zone coverage. He would make a very good safety IMO because he's big and can tackle and has good instincts against the pass, but he can no longer match up man 2 man on wide receivers. It was one of the major reasons why we played so much zone last year because Mathis and Beasley were in the lineup so much, and both are better zone corners than man guys.

I thought earlier in the off-season, the Falcons had two options: re-sign Beasley or Carpenter to compete for the other safty spot. THe team chose Carpenter. Not a bad choice at all, but I don't think you can have both on the roster sicne both are very similar players.

Just an idea I thought I'd throw out there...Scott played corner in college so we could perhaps move him back to corner if needs be.

As had been said before in this post, but so everyone knows what I think *grin*, I would rather have seen Buhl. Did anyone ever confirm if he signed somewhere else?
