I want more man coverage

Postby Steve-O » Sat Aug 20, 2005 2:46 pm

I am sick of seeing our secondary playing 10 yards off of the ball. We get killed in the passing game every year because we can't play tight coverage. We have a cb in Hall that can play the man coverage and we should take advantage of that. I know it's only preseason still but we look like we are playing the same soft zones we played all year last year. I understand we are a bend don't break team, but we really need to tighten up a bit or the short passing game will kill us all year.

We supposedly got rid of the "bend but dont break" philosophy when Philips left town. Donatell installed a zone coverage defense that reminds me an awful lot of "bend but dont break".

Remember we also have midgets for CB's. DeLo is the biggest at 5'10" 200.

Yu'lin: Webster can go man on man against most #2's but from an interview I heard on 680theFan, DHall now decides for himself when to play bump or off.

I would like to see us cover more agressively as well...

The excuse las tyear was that Hall & Webster were hurt, and our other CBs (mathis, Beasley) were better zone guys than man guys. This year, the excuse might be that because of the injuries at DE, we won't be able to put as good pressure on the QB.

But I agree, our defense won't be able to take it to the next level until we go to a man mainly defense.

yea I see us giving up a ton of yards this year too...I'm not worried about our DE's. I think once we get rolling everyone should be healthy, and Davis looks like he'll be good enough to play in a rotation at least. Plus Mitchell can play inside or out so he could rotate too...

Not that I disagree with you, Cap - I've just not seen him on the field enough to even begin make any sort of judegements on his abilities. If he can, and can stay healthy, then yeah - lets do it.

Otherwise, I think we're in for another year of the junk passing yards talk. Let's just hope we can hold the opposing O's out of the endzone as much as we did last year.

Edit : Smashed the typo-bugs

His health is definitely the key issue and rightfully questioned...

If nothing else I would love to see Hall play some man cover on an island inside of our 10 man zone schemes, similar to what Deion used to do with the Cowboys when they were dominant.
