2 free agents to consider...

Postby fun gus » Thu May 15, 2014 8:40 am

Brett Keisel. Yeah, he's 35, but he can be had on the cheap, he was a ProBowl veteran on a team with a defensive identity. He is good depth, and can push guys...

Jim Leonhard. can be had for the vet minimum. can also catch punts, if needed. we have nothing of depth at safety..

thoughts?

Leonhard, absolutely.

I don't think that Keisel should be brought in. I don't think that he's, "better," than the guys that we have now. Obviously, he used to be. But he is 35 and we just drafted a guy that would fill his role.

He's retiring after the 2014 season. So he's a one year stop gap and not really more than a roster spot. Probably can find better/younger on the scrap heap. I'd say pass.

I wouldn't be bringing in Leonhard for his play... I'd be bringing him in to help coach a very raw athletic guy that we just reached for in the draft.

that's the reason I bring in Keisel. For 'depth', and to 'push' the younger guys....or the J A G's. :ninja:

Why would we bring in those guys when we just drafted Ra'Shede Hageman and Dez Southward?

Wouldn't mind Leonard for safety depth, but there is absolutely zero point in bringing Keisel. Babs, Jackson, Hageman, Goodman. How many other 3-4 defensive ends do you want?

if the choice is Goodman/Maponga vs Keisel he wins hands down....
I prefer someone other then 'So-So-Osi' to push our 2nd round reach pick

So-so Osi is actually capable of putting up double digit sacks still. Keisel has never done it. Keisel is also 35. Obviously, dude is a stud, and signifies what it means to be, "a Steeler." Still, we already have some tough choices to make on who to keep on the DL. We currently have 6 DTs and 6 DEs. How many of each do you plan to keep?

SInce when did Keisel and Osi become a debate? Everyone knows Osi isn't playing a DE in the 3-4. He would get manhandled in there. How this argument came about is mind boggling. Two totally different players.

good point. We could dump Jerry, IMO. But, your right there is quite a logjam there....

I was simply responding to Fun Gus. I don't think that there's anything mind boggling about it. Would you sooner have Osi or Keisel on the team? Just because they don't play the same position doesn't mean that we can't discuss it.

Fun Gus, had you made these suggestions before the draft, I would have been in favor of them. Moreso then because it would've mean the team wouldn't have been as compelled to use early-round picks on another 5-technique DE and a developmental safety.

But once we drafted Hageman and Southward, given their potential to be developed, there's simply no point at this point to add one-year stopgaps at either position.
