Falcons agree to terms with DT Paul Soliai and G Jon Asamoah, per source.

Lance Zierlein ‏@LanceZierlein · 11m
Hearing from league sources that Kansas City Chiefs DE Tyson Jackson will agree to terms with the Atlanta Falcons. No word on financials.

Only a couple ex-Chiefs there.

Great initial signings, but at what price did we get them?

Looks like Asamoah got a 5-year deal around $22.5 million if the rumors are true. If he fills the RG hole it's a good deal. It's an upgrade none the less.

With Peters & Babs coming back + signing of Soliai this about seals the deal that Atlanta goes 3-4 for their base defense next year.

That and it looks like Jackson is a Falcon who is about a 300lbs DE.

That's a lot of meat.

confirmation via D-Led:

UPDATE: Asamoah, Jackson and Soliai agree to deals with Falcons | Atlanta #Falcons blog http://shar.es/RGV8f via @sharethis

My money is now on Atlanta going after Kahlil Hill, Anthony Barr or picking up an OT in the 1st round now.

I really like these signings. I do home we bring in Champ for FS and then draft a safety to replace him in a couple of years.

So where does our DL look now if we do switch to a 3-4?

Also, I'm all for Mack now for our first pick if we do switch to a 3-4. Think Clowney would cost too much and there is enough OL depth to get a 2nd round tackle. Think Mack would be a good pick up.

Soliai gets $33 million over 5 Years w/$14.5 Million guaranteed.

DE - Babineaux, Jackson, Peters, Jackson, Goodman
NT - Soliai, Robertson

Atlanta needs more depth @ DT because Soliai is their only honest to God NT.

Then I'm guessing LB Unit would be:

OLB: Bierman, Bartu, Osi, Matthews?
ILB: Weatherspoon, Worrilow

Atlanta needs to draft an LB 1st if they do go 3-4 IMO. Wouldn't be surprised to see Osi get axed at somepoint... Doesn't really fit in a 3-4. Unless Atlanta does a lot of hybrid schemes.

What DTs could you see us going after in FA? Any chance of getting Raji to go along with Soliai? Isn't Terrence Cody a FA?

Also, any DEs you like? I think we are good there till the draft.

What about LBs? Wouldn't mind seeing Woodley or Ware but only if very team friendly deals.

What do you think about Owen Daniels for TE? I know the Ravens will probably pick him up but I like him at TE.

I don't think the Falcons many any additional moves of significance for the next few weeks aside from picking up some lesser known depth players.

I suspect Atlanta will stand pat (save for possibly going after Byrd or Bailey - I don't see either happening) and go into the draft looking for an OT and LB with their Top 2 picks.

With all signals that Atlanta is going base 3-4 this year I fully expect Mack to be their top target. He maybe just as tough to get as Clowney. If no Mack I'd expect Atlanta to take the best OT available or trade down and possibly get Barr.

Seems to me that depth is going to be an issue on DL & LB if they make the switch. I could see Atlanta grabbing another NT mid-draft as well.

I'd probably pass on Daniels and go after Garrett Graham since I don't believe he has been resigned by Houston yet.

Though he probably won't be cheap and we at least know the Packers are after him in addition to Houston trying to keep him.

Allot to take in here, I like what we did for the most part. We overpaid by a bit for everyone, but that is to be expected with the cap going up suddenly making this year a great year to be a FA. With us cutting Tony and Decoud officially now, If you do the math out, this should be somewhere between 15-20 million against the cap, plus add around 4 for Babs, and 1 for Peters and we should have about 5-10 million still available without restructuring anyone, which we still might due. Thus I think we will look for one more starting level player, probably a safety.

That is a lot of money. Unless the Falcs trade down they will have to spend a couple mill on their draft pics.

The Falcons definitely got better today.....on 1st and 2nd down. Outside of the Asomoah signing I am not a huge fan of the additions or the money they gave to Tyson Jackson or Soliai. Soliai is a two down player at best at a position we could have drafted in the 4th -6th rounds and found a starter. Tyson Jackson is a bust whom has played better against the run but has nine sacks in the last five years. I know the contracts are probably structured to allow Atlanta to cut them if it doesnt work out but the Falcons had a real opportunity and this is what they came up with.

Yes the Falcons were bad against the run but they have been horrible on 3rd down since Mike Smith and Co got here. None of the moves today will do anything to change that. If anything it will make it worse seeing as though we dont have a starting FS on our roster.

Well, this is a lot more than I expected. I was expecting us to grab Asamoah and sit on our laurels for a few days, but we didn't. Gold star for effort on the day.

Our DL will be a LOT better this year. We can now go after a 3-4 OLB in the draft and make it a unit to be feared. I'm liking the idea of, "hybrid," a lot more with these guys out on the field.

Getting Asamoah is about 3 years overdue. We finally have a legitimate right guard. He's obviously not an all-star, but he is solid, which is a lot better than what we've had.

I would like to see the Falcons bring in Sidney Rice for a workout. I would think that we'd be able to get him cheap, perhaps even a, "home town discount." He's also still young at 27. Obviously there are injury concerns, but again, I think that the risk/reward would be pretty good.

I'd also give a look to Devin Hester. I still consider our return game to be questionable.

I'm generally happy with the moves the Falcons made yesterday. My only real complaint is how much we signed for some of the players we brought in.

I feel we overpaid Soliai but not as badly as we overpaid Jackson which seemed way over his actual value. Granted pass rushing duties fall more to the LB/S positions in a 3-4 but Jackson can only do 1 thing that that is stop the run.

I just feel we could have been a bit more frugal. I do like to contract we signed Asamoah to if the numbers I saw yesterday are accurate.

I feel best about Sol, because he played for Nolan in Miami. I am guessing that Nolan had some input into this signing and how much he can help.

It seems all the signings yesterday where due to influence from Pioli or Nolan and not Dimitroff.

I wonder if Dimitroff had is control reduced some how this year.

Falcons 3rd down defense rankings:

2008 - 14th
2009 - 32nd
2010 - 24th
2011 - 30th
2012 - 26th
2013 - 32nd

Five worst defenses on 3rd down combined (2008-13)

32. Colts - 42.4% 3rd downs converted against
31. Browns - 42.3%
30. Falcons - 42.2%
29. Patriots - 42.2%
28. Jaguars - 41.8%

Literally the difference between the Falcons being worst than the Colts is 3 stops over 6 seasons (over 1200 plays).
