Report: Chris Kluwe hires an attorney for Vikings investigation

Last week, former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe caused a huge stink across the NFL when he accused Minnesota special teams coach Mike Priefer of being a bigot while calling former coach Leslie Frazier and current general manager Rick Spielman cowards for their reaction to Kluwe's outspokenness on marriage equality.

Priefer immediately denied the allegations, and the team has hired former Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court Eric Magnuson and former US Department of Justice trial attorney Chris Madel to lead an independent investigation into Kluwe's accusations.

As such, Kluwe has hired a Minneapolis-based attorney and he'll receive representation from the National Center for Lesbian Rights, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Kluwe wrote in his piece for Deadspin that he believed his outspoken politics is what caused the team to release him this past offseason.

"Chris Kluwe stands up for what he believes is right, even if it costs him personally to do so," attorney Clayton Halunen said in the statement released on Kluwe's behalf. "It's obvious to me, as it should be to most thinking people familiar with the situation, that Chris paid a steep price for speaking out in favor of same-sex marriage rights in 2012 while he was a Vikings player. Ultimately, it may have cost him both his job with the Vikings and his career as an NFL player, along with much emotional anguish over what he believed to be a kind of personal attack on him for his views on a vital issue of human rights.

"Even so, Chris is not bitter towards the Vikings, nor does he carry a personal vendetta against anyone associated with the team. He is grateful to the Vikings for the great career he had with the team. But he couldn't stand by when someone with as much influence in sports as a member of the Vikings coaching staff makes dangerous and dehumanizing statements against the LGBT community."

Kluwe also wrote in the piece that once he completed his article for Deadspin, his career in the NFL effectively was finished.

But Kluwe also wrote this at the end of his essay: "Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Never be afraid to do what's right. If no one ever says anything, nothing ever changes."

I admire Kluwe. He's obviously not the best punter around, but he was decent. He used his limited fame as a pedestal to speak out about some things. Seems like a pretty decent human being to me.

So, Kluwe says one guy is a bigot and the other two are cowards and he is suggesting that he has somehow been blighted? Maybe he just didn't punt well enough. Sanctimony and Victimization...is that the name of those two gorillas?

He punted just fine.

He holds most of the punting records for the Vikings.

He understands that it is the Vikings prerogative to get rid of him for speaking out, but he says that the ST coach was very anti-gay, and that's the reason he doesn't have a job. It more or less came down to him butting heads with the ST coach over gay rights, and one of them had to go. It doesn't seem to have much to do with his performance. That's what he's claiming. Obviously, we haven't heard the other side of the story, but Kluwe has been very open about all of this, and the stats speak for themselves.

Kluwe was cut in camp because he was up against the world's greatest punter: Marquette King!

But his numbers suggest that he'd probably be a better option than at least a third of the punters in the league

Personally, I don't care about same sex marriage, but stuff like that can divide locker rooms and should just be left alone for the good of the team. Three things that you don't do bring into a locker room is gambling, religion, and politics, because some people have such extreme views that if opinions differ they will think different of you. Kluwe is awesome for speaking up for civil rights and everything but it just became to big of a distraction DURING the season.

Agree. There is a time and place for everything. You're a punter. Punt. And get over yourself while you're doing it. The intolerance of intolerance is still intolerance.
