Spoon doubtful to play against Ravens
August 12th, 2013 Aaron Freeman Edit No comments

Via the team’s official twitter, Falcons head coach Mike Smith indicated that linebacker Sean Weatherspoon is unlikely to play in the team’s second preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens this Thursday. Other reports from Smith indicated that wide receiver Julio Jones is likely to suit up for the first time this preseason after missing the team’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday. Spoon suffered an open dislocation on his finger last week, an injury that required stitches and is expected to be held out until the wound fully heals. Jones missed last week’s game due to tightness in his hamstring that left him limited in team practices, but he fully participated in yesterday’s practice for the first time in a week.

No word on whether other recently injured players such as linebacker Robert James, fullback Bradie Ewing, and running back Antone Smith will suit up on Thursday evening. Both Ewing and Smith were initially expected to miss 5 to 10 days of practice when they first went down with injuries on July 30. James suffered his injury during the Bengals game after limited work. All three players missed Saturday’s practice.

I would think it is safe to say that Spoon probably won't get any pre-season action.

It wouldn't surprise me if he plays in the last preseason game.

Sounds like he's on track to play in the all-important 3rd preseason game. But we'll see.

If does get game time I'd imagine it would be pretty limited. At least he should be good to go by the start of the season.

Sean Weatherspoon rejoins Falcons

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Sean Weatherspoon returned to Atlanta Falcons practice on Monday after sitting out a week because of a left finger injury.

That is good news for a defense that can't afford to be without him very long.

Weatherspoon, the No. 19 pick in the 2010 draft, is Atlanta's lone elite linebacker. He plays every snap unless he is injured.

Falcons coach Mike Smith said Weatherspoon likely won't make his preseason debut until next week at Tennessee.

Weatherspoon left practice on Aug. 5 with a dislocated left finger that had an open wound. He was limited in participation on Monday with two fingers taped heavily together under a protective glove.

The team didn't make Weatherspoon available to speak with reporters.

"We didn't want him to have any contact quite yet, but we wanted to get him back out and let him work through drills," Smith said Monday night. "He will progress each day a little bit more."

Without Weatherspoon, Atlanta's linebacker corps might rank among the NFL's least effective. Only Akeem Dent and Stephen Nicholas have substantial game experience.

Robert James has been almost exclusively a special teams player, but the rest of the depth chart consists of Pat Schiller, Nick Clancy, Joplo Bartu, Brian Banks and Paul Worrilow -- none of whom has played in an NFL game.

Competition is wide open, and Smith indicated that reserves who didn't get first- and second-quarter snaps last week could have some chances when Atlanta (0-1 preseason) visits Baltimore (1-0) on Thursday.

"Often times, the first time out, they're playing in the third and fourth quarter," Smith said. "We'd surely like to see some of these guys compete against some of the front-line players that will be in playing in (the regular season)."
