The Indiana Pacers are finalizing an agreement to re-sign forward David West to a three-year, $36 million deal, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal can not be formalized until the free agency moratorium lifts on July 10.

West is as vital a member of the Pacers' core as there is, not only for his production (17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last season) but for the leadership that has helped them become one of the premier teams in the Eastern Conference.

He'll return to the team that pushed the defending champion Miami Heat to seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals after a regular season in which they finished 49-32.

Good move by the Pacers.
Sometimes running the Mularkey offense makes me feel like I'm in a prison.
