How good do you think the chances are that Tony will actually come back? I'm not sure how often this question has been asked on here but I'm starting to think that it's more than the 50% he was telling us during the season. I obviously wish he'd come back... Especially because I don't actually want us to have to get someone like Eifert in the first round when we have so many holes on the defensive side of the ball or on the offensive line.

The best odds I could give it is 55%.

When Tony was saying that he was 97% likely to retire the week before the NFC Championship Game, and then his very dejected post-game interview after the 49er game where he was pretty upset that game would be his final note in the NFL. But he seemed that he had already mentally decided to walk away.

Now, I suspect he'll get the itch. But I think Tony has a plan about how he's going to leave the game, and has since he left KC. And I think everything went according to plan, except the 49ers loss. But I don't know if that itch he has will be great enough to get him off the plan. Tony is not a guy that needs football.

I also think he's keeping an eye on what the Falcons do this off-season to potentially draw him back. If the Falcons can get a good running game going, I think the odds that Tony comes back become higher.

I'm optimistic that Tony is coming back. But I'm assuming he won't.

with FA opening tuesday, when would Tony have to tell TD yes/no?

Pudge, I get that: but what I am wondering is if TD is interested in getting a FA TE, wouldn't he need to know that asap?

Yeah, if he was interested in getting a free agent TE.

But I believe the Falcons plan all along was to wait Tony out, and if/when he said no, they would draft someone. I think they plan on drafting someone regardless, just that if Tony is non-committal or says it's over by the beginning of April, then it means they might draft one with their Top 2 picks.

There are some good TEs available as free agents, but really nobody that you want to commit long-term to.

An aging star in great shape can miss the entire preseason and still be effective. Michael Strahan proved that in 2007, capping his career with a storybook Super Bowl win.

Now comes word that tight end Tony Gonzalez, who earlier was 95 percent sure he'd retire, might want to follow a similar script. An unnamed teammate told Yahoo's Michael Silver that Gonzalez would play one more season for the Falcons “if they pay him $7 million and he doesn't have to do training camp."

A team source offered confirmation, telling Silver: "If we offer him the money, he'll most likely be back for one more. He'll most likely be looking to miss training camp, though."

Gonzalez (6-5, 247) is famous for staying in tip-top condition and eating right.

His production would be outstanding for someone 10 years younger. In the regular season, Gonzalez caught 93 balls for 930 yards and eight touchdowns. He finally won his first playoff game and caught 14 of 15 postseason targets, scoring against Seattle and San Francisco.

With the Falcons coming so close to the Super Bowl, it makes sense for the 37-year-old Gonzalez to give it one more whirl. He earned $4.9 million last year.

"The money is there," a source close to Gonzalez told Silver. "Working out the days he can miss is the biggest holdup."

The Falcons are "cautiously optimistic" Gonzalez will be suiting up for a 17th season, according to the report.

The future Hall of Famer has caught 1,242 career passes, second in NFL history to Jerry Rice.
