Falcons mindful of saving counters for playoffs

Posted Dec. 10, 2012 @ 4:47 p.m. ET
By Dan Parr

After another lackluster performance by the Falcons’ offense in the team’s Week 14 loss to the Panthers, doubt about Atlanta’s chances of making noise in the playoffs is on the rise.

We’re hearing talk around the league that defenses have caught on to the Atlanta offense — it has sputtered, going 3-for-19 on third down in the past two games. QB Matt Ryan, who has fallen from the perch he had as a leading MVP candidate early in the season, has been playing some of his worst football of the season lately. Atlanta is not making the chunk-yardage plays through the air that it was earlier in the season.

However, one insider said there is a theory that the Falcons will not reveal all the adjustments they may be inclined to make in the playoffs in the last several weeks of the regular season. With the NFC South title already in hand and a first-round bye likely, the Falcons are not facing must-win games at this point. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter could hold off on revealing new wrinkles and save his counters for the playoffs.

I thought about that but I find it unlikely. I do think a combo of better teams in general and people having film on us has resulted in the down turn.

Put up 40 a game and let the other defenses try to figure that out! Put up 40 a game and dominate and see what teams want to face you come the playoffs. Smack someone in the mouth so hard they can't get up again, that is what a real team should be doing [ala the Patriots].

Playing like this just ensures that EVERY team wants you in the playoffs because you are woeful.

There are no 'counters' here, Ryan is shaken, the O-line can't protect or provide running lanes, and Turner is finished.

If I was any NFC team I'd be licking my chops to get to Atlanta because that all but guarantees a trip to the Championship Game which is a 50/50 shot at the SB.

More like an 80/20 shot if your facing the Falcons.

He means 50/50 in that two teams play in the NFC championship.

The implication before that is that ATL creates 100/0 odds.
