Scoring and Tie-breakers

Postby Pudge » Sun Apr 19, 2009 10:50 am

MATCHING
The whole point of mock drafts is to get the right player on the right team. Therefore, matching the correct player to the correct team gives you the most points. You will be rewarded 2 points if you match the correct player to the correct team.

PLACING
If you do not correctly match the player to the right team, but that player still winds up being a first round pick, then you will receive 1 point.

ORDERING
here is also going to be emphasis placed on the correct order of players selected, given that is the most difficult notion to predict. If a player is selected in the correct order, then you will receive 1 point, in addition to any other points earned. For every pick that player is incorrectly ordered, 0.1 points will be subtracted.

For example, if you have a team selecting Player A twelfth overall, but he winds up being the sixth overall pick, then you will receive 0.4 points (12 - 6 = off by 6 picks, 1.0 - 0.6 = 0.4 pts).

In this year's draft, you will also be picking the Falcons second round pick as well. Matching the player, and order will be the same as it will be for the first round. The only difference is that you will be correctly placing the player in the second round, which will gain you that point.

SCORING EXAMPLE
This means that the maximum amount of points you can receive for any pick is four points. Here's an example of the scoring system using 2011 draft:

YOUR MOCK:
1. Carolina - Cam Newton
2. Denver - Patrick Peterson
3. Buffalo - Marcell Dareus
4. Cincinnati - A.J. Green
5. Arizona - Blaine Gabbert
6. Cleveland - Julio Jones
7. San Francisco - Von Miller

ACTUAL DRAFT:
1. Carolina - Cam Newton
2. Denver - Von Miller
3. Buffalo - Marcell Dareus
4. Cincinnati - A.J. Green
5. Arizona - Patrick Peterson
6. Atlanta - Julio Jones
7. San Francisco - Aldon Smith

You would score the following for each pick:

1. Correct Match + Placement + Order = (2 + 1 + 1) = 4 points
2. Correct Placement + Incorrect Order = (1 + 0.3) = 1.3 points
3. Correct Match + Placement + Order = (2 + 1 + 1) = 4 points
4. Correct Match + Placement + Order = (2 + 1 + 1) = 4 points
5. Correct Placement + Incorrect Order = (1 + 0.5) = 1.5 points
6. Correct Placement + Order = (1 + 1) = 2 points
7. Correct Placement + Incorrect Order = (1 + 0.5) = 1.5 points

So in this example mock, you're score would be 16.3 points.

I hope you grasp the gist of this.

TIE-BREAKERS

1. The most points accumulated via the Falcons pick(s). For example, if due to order you earn 3.8 points for the Falcons pick and the person tied with you only accumulates 3.1 points.
2. The most matches in the first round of the draft.
3. The most matches in the first 10 picks of the first round. Subsequent tie-breakers will apply the most matches in the first 20 picks, followed by the Top 30. The only way there should be a tied after this point is if people submit identical mock drafts.

You are more than welcome to predict as many trades as you want, as this year you may actually receive credit for correctly predicting them.

The maximum number of points that can be scored is 132 points, although a score of 60 would be a very strong showing.

I'm sure a lot of people will be confused, but don't stress about it. You're still getting more credit for matching players to the right team, so that still is the thing you should probably focus most on. It's just that now you are getting some credit for correct order.

This is the same scoring system used in 2009 and 2010 contests, except 2nd round projections are no longer factored in 2011.

SO WE ARE ONLY DOING ROUND 1 THIS YEAR???? Sorry for caps but I was gonna work on tonight, but if I only have to do round 1 thats much much easier.

I think sacrificing round 2 but adding the order piece to round one is two great adjustments from last year fwiw.

Note, I've updated the scoring to reflect that the 2012 contest will only include 1 round + an additional Falcons pick.
