Team Needs: Washington Redskins

NEEDS RATING KEY

5.0 - High priority. This is a position that is a glaring weakness and there is the likelihood that this team cannot compete next year without making a major addition here.

4.0 - Medium Priority. This is an area that is an obvious weakness, but the team isn't quite desperate to make a major move here possibly because they have some young potential. But this is an area that if the team cannot fix via free agency, will definitely use one of their picks in the first three or four rounds to supplement.

3.0 - Upgrade Potential. This is a position that isn't a weakness per se, but there is significant room for an upgrade. If the right player comes along they will certainly snag him, but if they don't fix this position with a major free agent addition or early round pick, then it's not the end of the world.

2.0 - Depth Need. An area where there is a need to add depth. Perhaps there is an aging veteran and they might want to start to look at grooming his heir apparent or replacement. Not likely to be a high priority and a position that more than likely will be address in the middle and late rounds rather than with a top pick.

1.0 - Future Need. This is an area that is not a priority, and doesn't initially appear as a need. But there is some room to develop some depth for perhaps two or more years down the line. This is usually an area that a team will look at in the late rounds if at all.

0.0 - Non-need. This is a position that is a strength of their team, they have a solid starter, capable depth, and/or a young player at the position that they like and want to develop. Very little possibility this area is addressed and would be the equivalent of a wasted draft pick.

Top 10 Needs

1. QB - 4.5
2. S - 3.5
3. CB - 3.0
4. WR - 3.0
5. OT - 2.5
6. TE - 2.5
7. OG - 2.5
8. DT - 2.5
9. DE - 2.0
10. LB - 2.0

Quarterback - The Redskins tried to make due with John Beck and Rex Grossman this past year, and while Grossman was competent at times, it's time for this team to solidify this spot once and for all. Mike Shanahan is on a short leash, likely prompting him to prefer a veteran that can come in right away and immediately upgrade this spot. But they won't spurn keeping an eye on some of the top prospects in the draft. But it's a sure bet that the opening day starter for the Redskins in 2012 is not currently on the roster. NEED: 4.5

Running Back - Tim Hightower is a free agent that they probably want back given he was productive before a torn ACL took him down. But given the injury concern, they likely won't offer him much. Making them more comfortable here is having Roy Helu, Ryan Torain, and Evan Royster in the mix as well, all of whom have been productive at various points. Shanahan tends to like having a good stable of backs to choose from, so there's nothing stopping them from making more additions. But if any come, it'll be later round picks. NEED: 1.5

Fullback - It's probable that Mike Sellers will be cut, giving the job to Darrel Young, who has shown some promise. NEED: 1.0

Wide Receiver - Santana Moss is their top wideout at this point, but Jabar Gaffney is coming off a career year. What the Redskins need more than anything is a playmaker that can stretch the field vertically. They hope that Leonard Hankerson can fill that niche, but he's coming off a hip injury. So they will likely supplement, preferably in the draft given both Moss and Gaffney are on the wrong side of 30. NEED: 3.0

Tight End - Fred Davis is a free agent, but he'll be a top priority to retain, potentially receiving the franchise tag. Chris Cooley is a player they want back, but he'll likely have to take a paycut in order to facilitate that happening. If he doesn't, then they'll definitely look to upgrade depth. The fact that Fred Davis is one more positive marijuana test from being booted for a year, probably means they could be eyeing another future option in the draft. NEED: 2.5

Offensive Tackle - Trent Williams started to grow into his own at left tackle before injuries and a four-game suspension for marijuana limited him. At right tackle, Jammal Brown hasn't been able to stay on the field due to injuries. At the least, they will probably try and shore up that spot with a good insurance policy. That could involve bringing Sean Locklear back as a free agent, but this is definitely a position that needs an upgrade in depth. NEED: 2.5

Offensive Guard - Chris Chester and Kory Lichtensteiger are the incumbents. Lichtensteiger is coming off a season-ending knee injury. They could probably use some more help to bolster depth and develop as potential replacements down the road. NEED: 2.5

Center - Will Montgomery is a serviceable center, but he's a free agent and it would be an opportune time to move in a different direction. There is room for improvement, but they seem to like the veteran and could retain him and keep developing Erik Cook behind him. NEED: 1.5

Defensive Tackle - Barry Cofield wasn't spectacular in his first season at the nose, but they seem committed to keeping him there. There is room for an upgrade if they can find a Vince Wilfork-type of player to handle this spot. So they could potentially eye some targets via the draft. NEED: 2.5

Defensive End - Stephen Bowen and Adam Carriker were a solid pair of starters, and getting Jarvis Jenkins back from injury should help. Carriker is a free agent, and they will likely be looking to replace him if need be. This is a position that you can probably expect another addition this off-season, potentially finding a replacement starter for Carriker via free agency, or adding a developmental depth option via the draft. NEED: 2.0

Linebacker - Re-signing London Fletcher will be a priority, but as will finding his heir apparent in the middle. Rocky McIntosh is a free agent and likely out the door. Perry Riley should be able to step in there, but whether or not he can be the anchor in the middle of this defense for years to come like Fletcher remains to be seen. They could seek that player via the draft. They are fine on the outside with Orakpo and Kerrigan. NEED: 2.0

Cornerback - DeAngelo Hall remains inconsistent, but they don't seem to mind. Josh Wilson was solid across from him, and Kevin Barnes is decent in the nickel. But they need to find someone that can both push Barnes, and eventually allow them to dump Hall. NEED: 3.0

Safety - LaRon Landry is good when healthy, but that is a major concern for him going forward. He's a free agent, and while the REdskins want him back, it's not a sure bet to happy given the uncertainty surrounding his decision to forgo surgery on his Achilles. O.J. Atogwe was benched late in the year, and while serviceable during his brief time as a Redskin probably isn't counted in their plans going forward. That leaves DeJon Gomes as their best option, and he could be in the mix to replace Atogwe. But given all the uncertainty at this position, it's a prime target to try and be solidified with at least one major addition this off-season. NEED: 3.5

Kicker - Graham Gano's production had 5 kicks blocked and injured his back late in the year. He's a restricted free agent and probably will retain his job, but it seems likely they will bring in another body to push him. NEED: 1.5

Punter - Sav Rocca was solid as usual, and despite the fact that he's 38, they are fairly secure here. NEED: 0.5

Return Specialist - After a strong 2010 season, Brandon Banks was mediocre this past year. But it doesn't seem likely they will be looking to go in a different direction. NEED: 1.0
