I'm taking a big risk here with the delicate sensibilites of the various posters and the need for clarity of topic in the forum but something really jumped out at me last night watching Smith at QB for the Ravens. The same things we have seen Vick do both good and bad were on display with this guy who--by the way--looked so lame at first I wondered whether it was Akili. He alluded pressure and turned would be sacks into gains or maybe even first downs but at the end of the game where they were basically in FG range he kept falling back trying to make a play and eventually took a 15 yard sack that pushed them out of FG range. They could have tied it and sent us into OT. He compounded it by throwing one of the five worst passes in NFL history right to Houston to end the game. Didn't Vick end a game versus Baltimore this same way...taking a sack when he least could afford to?
As big of a fan and admirier as I have been of MV I watched this guy last night and thought, "Wow, that was us." Now, Troy could not carry Mike's jock but it was nice to see accurate passes, adjustments at the line of scrimmage, hard counts, QBs wearing headsets, QBs talking to players rather than sequestered with a micro-managing OC, etc. I think we may well suck this year and I hate how things ended with Vick because the ultimate decision was never made by the way he played on the field and I do think the last staff were pretty awful but the team looked more polished this pre-season than they have in three years and I was glad we had the passers and not the street baller last night. I think the scouts did their job letting T. Smith drop int he draft. Between the way he looked last night and the way FL made him look last year he must not be all that and a bag of chips.

Smith is weak and does not belong in the same converstion with MV. In fact, MV doesn't belong in any conversations right now, given his status at the moment. We have seen MV make plays passing when given time. And all QBs look better in a Petrino offense because his ego doesn't supersede his desire to win -- he lets QBs make adjustments. Imagine an NBA game where the players cannot adjust on their own, or a tennis match or even a golf tourney.

Next year, the league being the copy-cat organization it is, wil have a lot of teams talking about giving the QBs more latitude. Today, Manning laps it up, as does Brady and Palmer. And as a result they are considered the elite QBs. Expect Harrington to have his best season by far this year.

Write it down...Championship.
