When the SCLC gathers this week to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and the promise of Barack Obama, the presence of at least one more major figure will loom large – Michael Vick.

During a press conference announcing the opening of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's 49th annual convention to celebrate the organization's 50th year, president Charles Steele noted that the organization would find some way to honor and recognize the embattled Falcon's quarterback who is under federal indictment on dogfighting charges.

"We will work with anyone who opens their heart and arms to us," said Steele.

Steele added that it still isn't clear how Vick will be honored and it is uncertain that Vick will attend any of the conference's events, which run through Wednesday.

The SCLC's support of Vick is the most significant and prominent since he was indicted on July 18 on charges of running a dogfighting ring out of a home he owned in rural Virginia.

The indictment went into great detail to describe the fate of dogs that lost. They were killed by electrocution, drowning or being slammed to the ground.

If convicted, Vick could face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The quarterback has also lost most of his endorsements and is not in training with his teammates.

National and local reaction towards Vick has been mixed, particularly in the black community. Media mogul Russell Simmons and activist and former presidential candidate Al Sharpton both condemned Vick and called for his corporate sponsors to break ties with him. But last week, here in Atlanta, R.L. White, president of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP, held a press conference and rally urging the public and the media not to rush to judgment against Vick.

Moving forward with their conference, at 7 p.m. tonight, the SCLC will hold its "Jimmy Lee Jackson & 50th Anniversary Recognition Dinner at the Hyatt Regency. The Rev. Jesse Jackson will deliver the keynote at the dinner. Jimmie Lee Jackson was a 26-year-old civil rights protester killed February 26, 1965, by an Alabama state trooper, while trying to protect his mother. Jackson's death was one of the sparks that lead to the Selma to Montgomery march. The trooper who shot Jackson, James Bonard Fowler, was charged in May with first and second-degree murder charges and awaits a spring court date. He is out on a $250,000 bail.

Obama is scheduled to speak Saturday night and former President Bill Clinton is schedule to speak Monday afternoon at the ribbon-cutting of the organization's new international headquarters. Former SCLC President Joseph Lowery will speak at the sold-out awards gala Tuesday night.

We don't know if Vick is guilty or no,...but he will walk.

One thing is certain,...VICK WILL NEVER BE A FALCON AGAIN, to the dismay of the sheep at the roost.

That's why I, and others, are starting to get excited about 2007 now. We don't have to worry about how this little guy that can't see over the line to find his receivers will perform this year. Even as bad as Harrington is, at least we know how bad he is and we don't have to hear the KIWI squeezers anymore!

Such a relief! Bye Mikey. Go shoot someone else a bird little boy.

SAD!

They could do so much if they would only tackle the real issues. Black on Black crime, Stay in school programs, unwed pregnancies, Mentor programs, etc.

SCLC: No honor for Vick
Head of civil rights group voiced only 'support' for Falcons QB

By STEVE VISSER

Published on: 08/06/07

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference has backed off its vow to honor accused dogfighter Michael Vick at its convention this week.

"There is no award or no honoring of Michael Vick," said SCLC spokesman David Stokes.

Last week, SCLC President Charles Steele told AJC reporters that the civil rights organization would honor and recognize the embattled Falcons quarterback who is under federal indictment on dogfighting charges.

"We need to support him no matter what the evidence reveals," Steele said before the convention began, adding that his organization was focusing on Vick's redemption.

So far the convention, which began Friday and ends Wednesday, has had no special event for Vick.

And on Monday, shortly before former President Bill Clinton was to address the convention, Stokes insisted that Steele never had any intention of honoring the quarterback, who is now banned from training with the team.

"He was just reiterating the support for Michael Vick ... that he was innocent until proven guilty," Stokes said.

State Rep. Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta), however, said Steele called him last week to talk about honoring Vick. Brooks, a lifetime SCLC member, said he counseled against it.

"I said, 'Stay on point, the convention is bigger than a particular man,' " Brooks said. "There are a lot of young people who need our help. Michael Vick is not one of them."

Vick had the money to pay for a top-notch legal defense, Brooks said, and he noted the quarterback hadn't been an SCLC supporter.

The veteran legislator said the SCLC should recruit Vick to assist in its programs after the convention but not become his public defender.

"What has he ever done except throw a football, run a football?" Brooks said. "I don't think he has done anything to deserve any special recognition."

An intelligent voice of reason.
