For off-topic and non-football related topics such as life, TV, movies, women, video games, etc. If you want to talk other sports, such as MLB, NBA, soccer, etc. this is also the right place.

My folks are big believers in the Doctors Without Borders program. Which do you think is the most streamlined. This is horrible. Haiti is like hell on earth without the earthquake.

The title of the thread is misleading. Actually it's what the WORLD does...not just the USA. DWB is Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), started as a FRENCH effort in 1971.

Am I missing something in the thread title that denotes the USA?

You may beg to differ but you are part of we...and I don't mean US. You are generally pretty up on this kind of stuff. If you were to make some sort of contribution that was specific to this which org would you go with? For Katrina I just gave to the Red Cross but that feels like putting a teaspoon in a 55 gallon drum.

I'm not really part of "we"...lol.....interesting theory though.

As far as a donation, just my two cents....but I donate to the following organization.

 Though it is a tad trivial to discuss such things in the face of a disaster, I feel there is some precedence to assume that Gus meant the USA. Not that it matters anyway.

It is trivial. Interesting link to the rescue dog operation. I wouldn't have thought of that. I guess you can't go wrong with the Red Cross. Seems to be what the Pres is promoting. I'm always a bit wary of operations that are huge bureaucracies but when you can't give directly and locally you have little choice. Have you given to that dog rescue op for a long time or in light of the current situation? While on the topic...have you ever been to the Infantry Museum at Ft. Benning and seen the display "Dogs of War?" Pretty cool. I need to get over there since it has been remodeled. Supposedly it is incredible.

I've been to the museum, but that was a long time ago and I can't recall the display. But I do enjoy reading about the Dogs of War. The dogs were essential in Korea and Vietnam...many died for the cause.

As far as the rescue donations go, I have given to them since 9/11. I know a German guy who trains the dogs for such disasters, and he told some wild stories about the dogs bravery/loyalty. The rescue units need help, as most are volunteers with day jobs. The equipment is expensive, and despite some federal/state help they need the donations.

Cool. Yeah, the story of the dogs in Nam is sad. At war's end they were all left there by orders of the army. A guy talked about just pulling out and leaving them in their kennels with no idea what would happen to them. The stories of them spotting snipers, trip wires, etc., is fascinating as well as dragging wounded guys off the field while taking rounds themselves. Mainly German Shephards and Labs, I think. Those GS's are incredible dogs....amazing how they share so many of the same personality traits.

They also used small dogs to go into the tunnels. Often they were the first ones killed after alerting on the VC. They are now playing a huge role in Iraq and Afghanistan as well. Holger, (the guy I know here), trains 4 dogs a year (GS's) and it is incredible watching the training sessions. The dogs are a lot smarter than some people I know...lol

mattered enough for you to post, huh? The hilarious thing is I had a bet that you wouldn't be able to NOT comment on this thread, and you performed your role beautifully!

I visited Labadee on a cruise once, and took a excursion inland a little. I cannot imagine how the infrastructure there could even begin to possibly deal with this. Things were pretty bad off there 3 years ago, these people must surelly be in hell tonight. I heard on NPR they were already calling up NG units and sending out the Navy to help...

I like the Salvation Army because I seem to recall after 9-11 reading about how the SA's overhead cost and donation-administrative costs were among the best.

No doubt. Those GS's are a notch above....must be the Aryan blood! My brother has one. It took a few years for it to calm down. It could be a hand full but he says it is the best dog he has ever had...which I also say about my present Lab. He is smart but not in a "problem solver" way. Some problem solver dogs are a real problem for the owner! Dogs are regular visitors to the HS here to search for drugs, etc.

Random thought - Wonder what the terrorists rebuttal would be to the fact that good ole USA is either first, or near the front of the line to provide help when stuff like this happens. We're the devil you know.

Probably that the USA is first in blowing up their families as well. Terrorists usually aren't concerning about our human side.

You are the English Major my friend. "Our" in the context of anyone that is not a terrorist.

Also per capita charitable giving shows that the USA in closer to the bottom.
