JOSH JASPER
5-10/174
LSU Senior

PROS:

Has good leg strength as a kicker, showing range to hit from beyond 50 yards. Does a good job inside 40 yards, with reliable accuracy there. Has the leg strength to drive the ball to the goalline on kickoffs, and for the most part is consistent in getting it to the 5 or closer. Does a nice job getting hangtime as a pooch punter, working the short field and allowing his coverage units to get downfield and pin teams deep. Flashes ability to work the coffin corner kick at times.

CONS:

His accuracy and range as a field kicker starts to be more erratic once you start to approach 45 yards and beyond. Doesn't wow you with his leg strength on kickoffs, as he can't consistently put the ball in the endzone for touchbacks. Will occasionally kick a line drive on the short field as a punter.

OVERVIEW:

Jasper is a relatively accurate and reliable field goal kicker that shows the versatility and ability to also handle punts and kickoffs. He made 83.9% of his 56 career field goals, showing reliable accuracy inside 40 yards (31 of 33 for his career), made all but one of his 76 extra points, and also hit from beyond 50 (5 of 7). It was between 40-49 yards where he was not so consistent, hitting on 11 of 16 (68.8%) with most of his misses coming as a senior (7 of 11). As a punter, he handled pooch punting responsibilities as a junior and senior. He combined for his career for 41 punts, averaging 39.8 yards, with 8 touchbacks, 7 fair catches, and 25 punts inside the 20. He had 2 blocked as a senior. He handled kickoff duties all four years, but with 256 career kicks, only had 13 touchbacks, and 5 were booted out of bounds.

NFL FORECAST:

Jasper is good enough to be an NFL kicker. He just won't be a great NFL kicker. But he is accurate enough and fairly reliable enough with good enough range to be competent. The main issue as a field goal kicker is becoming more consistent from around and beyond 45 yards. He has the potential to get there, just needs some refining. And it would not surprise me if early in his career he struggles with consistency. He can handle kickoff duties at the pro level, and thinks to the new kickoff rules can be adequate there. But he's not a touchback machine, and if you have someone better, you're better off turning to him. He's a capable pooch punter, but isn't quite developed enough there to think he can handle that gig at the next level on a regular basis. But it at least means that if your punter goes down, you can be confident that he can outshine most NFL kickers as a stopgap. I wouldn't trust him as a rookie kicker, but I think two or three years down the road, he'd be good enough to compete for and win a job. And from that point on I think he's good enough to be an above average to good NFL kicker. The main thing that will keep him from sticking long-term in the league is his accuracy and range from 45 yards and beyond. Teams don't keep kickers for very long if they can't be trusted to make those 48-yarders, and I'm not convinced Jasper is going to be that guy. He can, but it may take some time.

ATL FORECAST:

Jasper is a good candidate to compete and push Bryant for his job. But he's not quite developed enough to think he could or should win it. If he has a strong summer, then the Falcons can contemplate bringing him back a year from now, hoping he'd be ready to handle the full-time duties.

VALUE:

He's not worth drafting, but definitely should get a look in somebody's camp.
