REID FORREST
6-1/189
Washington State Senior

PROS:

Shows potential and ability to work the short field, able to get good hangtime and pin opponents inside their ten. Flashes some directional ability to work the sideline a bit on the short field. Usually gets good hangtime on most of his kicks to allow his teammates to get downfield and cover. Has a nice leg, and shows some ability to get distance on his kicks.

CONS:

Doesn't have the big booming leg to kick his team consistently out of trouble. Will outkick his coverage at times. He's not money on the short field. Will attempt rugby style punts at times.

OVERVIEW:

Forrest has NFL-caliber tools, but he doesn't really wow you with anything. But he shows enough accuracy, hangtime, and directional potential to think he can be a guy that can work field position and help a team pin teams deep. He showed improved production each year as their punter for all four years. His best season came as a senior where he averaged 45.4 yards on 66 punts with 19 placed inside the 20, and had 2 blocked. Was a three sport star at his high school in Alaska, including being their quarterback.

NFL FORECAST:

Forrest can compete in the NFL, but he doesn't wow you with his accuracy or distance to really think he's anything more than an above average to good punter at the next level. And it's probably going to take him some time before he gets to that level. He flashes accuracy, but doesn't consistently get hangtime to a level where you think that skill will immediately translate in the pros. I don't expect him to come into a camp right away and earn a job. He's more likely the guy that a team turns to midway through the season. But he probably is a guy that will bounce around a couple of camps for two or so summers before he develops enough to stick permanently on a roster. And even when he does, he'll probably be just an average punter. He's the type of guy that can potentially average 42-44 yards per punt, but he'll probably be among the bottom half of the league in terms of distance. So unless he gets his placement and directional kicking skills to a level where he can dominate the short field and field position, then there is nothing really special about him.

ATL FORECAST:

He might be better off punting indoors here in Atlanta because his lack of ideal leg strength is less of an issue, and his ability to get hangtime and placement would likely improve. But Forrest isn't a good candidate to replace Koenen if the Falcons don't keep him. There are better veteran options that can come in right away. So he likely wouldn't stick in Atlanta. He's more of a body that can push for time, but is probably at least a year or two away from where he is good enough to hold the Falcons job permanently. Not to mention the fact that his inability to kick off means his value is a lot less.

VALUE:

Forrest would probably be a reach if a team drafted him since he's not a great bet to make a roster because of his lack of top upside. But he's worth a look in camp, and could potentially surprise in an open competition.

SKILLS
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Leg Strength: 3.0
Directional Kicking: 3.0
Placement: 3.0
Kick-offs: N/A
Clutch Kicking: 2.5
