TYLER SASH
6-0/211
Iowa Junior
40: 4.63

PROS:

Has excellent closing burst and does a good job coming upfield and making the stop on the edge. Has good straight-line speed and does a good job cutting a ballcarrier's legs in the open field. Can get upfield and funnel play back inside, doing a nice job setting the edge. Shows decent speed and range in coverage. Comfortable working and moving in space.

CONS:

Not the strongest tackler at the point of attack and tends to rely on cutting the legs of the ballcarrier. Doesn't break down well at the point of attack. Takes some poor angles out on the edge and can whiff on some tackles. Doesn't have ideal awareness or ball skills when working in coverage, and not a guy that is going to break up a lot of passes.

OVERVIEW:

Sash does a very good job coming up and defending the run in Iowa's conservative defense. He often plays Cover-2, which is likely the scheme he'll have to play in at the next level. A productive three-year starter at strong safety that didn't have as strong a junior campaign as he did as a sophomore. His sophomore year he recorded 85 tackles, 5.5 for loss, 6 picks, 6 breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. Came back as a junior with 79 tackles, 3.5 for loss, 2 picks, and 2 breakups.

NFL FORECAST:

There are things to like about Sash, and I think he can make a nice starter in a Cover-2 scheme. BUt unless he's playing for the Bucs, Colts, or Bears, he's going to be hard-pressed to stick as a starter. He just doesn't give you much of anything in coverage. And while he's good in run support, his propensity to take some bad angles and the fact that he's not a great wrap tackler means he could struggle a lot more there at the next level. I think he's a guy that you play in deep coverage, let him keep things in front of him, and then let him work from there. For the most part, he probably then projects as a reserve in most schemes. He's the type of guy that manages to have a nice, long career because he offers valuable depth and special teams play. The player he would remind me of is Jon McGraw. McGraw was a much bigger, stronger run defender coming out, but I think like McGraw he'll be considered more of a journeyman stopgap safety than a long-term option as a starter. You keep Sash around for depth more than because you really believe in him as a starter. Again, in the right scheme, such as a Cover-2 one, he can be an effective starter. But at some point, a bigger, stronger, more athletic, and/or versatile safety prospect is going to come along and take his job.

ATL FORECAST:

Sash can add depth in the Falcons secondary. He'll fit what they do in regards to playing Cover-2, and he'll stick his nose in there as a run defender. He'd make a good No. 3 safety because he can potentially play either spot in the scheme but only as a reserve. He's not a good candidate to potential replace DeCoud as a starter in 2012. And while I think he could get by there, it wouldn't take long before the Falcons looked for a better player come 2013 or 2014.

VALUE:

For a Cover-2 scheme looking for a solid, but unspectacular starter, Sash makes a nice third or fourth round option. For most other schemes, he projects more as a reserve and shouldn't go off the board until the fifth round.

SKILLS
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Speed: 3.5
Tackling: 3.0
Coverage: 2.0
Ball Skills: 2.5
Range: 2.5
