RASHAD CARMICHAEL
5-10/185
Virginia Tech Senior
40: 4.40 (estimated)

PROS:

A good athlete with good speed to run with receivers. Has good hips and burst out of his breaks. Has quick feet and a good backpedal. Shows good ball skills to play the ball in the air and does a nice job turning and locating the pass. Can play both press and off coverage, but better in the latter. Does a nice job keeping things in front of him, coming up quickly to make stop after the catch. Comes up and will set the edge in run support, able to break down and make the open field tackle or cut a back's legs.

CONS:

Isn't very big and limits his effectiveness in press because he can't consistently get a good jam. Gives up too many deep balls and doesn't play with a ton of discipline. Can be a bit handsy when running with receivers and gets turned around at times in coverage. Can get caught looking in the backfield and doesn't always show good awareness when working in zone when it comes to anticipating routes and jumping plays. Loses assignments and doesn't get enough depth at other times in zone. Will lower the shoulder at times in run support, instead of wrapping up leading to missed tackles.

OVERVIEW:

Carmichael is a playmaker that doesn't always play with the discipline you like to see, but his talent means that he has quite a bit of upside for the next level. The key with him is whether or not he's going to play smarter football at the next level. He was the starter at boundary corner the past two years, which plays the short side of the field and in Tech's scheme it is typically the better of the two in terms of man coverage. The past two years he combined for 95 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 10 picks, 13 breakups, and returned a pick for a TD in each of the two seasons.

NFL FORECAST:

Carmichael can be a starter at the next level, and a good one. It'll all depend on whether he starts to play with more discipline. His playmaking ability should allow him to make up for mistakes, but you wonder if you leave him on an island in man coverage against quality receivers how effective he can be. There are too many mental errors and breakdowns from him, where he seems to be playing down to his competition, which is never a good omen for his NFL future. He has No. 1 cornerback potential because he has the athleticism to matchup with most receivers, but I would think he's more likely to be a No. 2 corner at the next level. He has potential to be a good zone corner, just needs to play smarter. But playing in a man scheme would benefit him the most. But at the least if he never develops the consistency teams want in a starter, he should be a solid nickel corner because of his superior athleticism. I would say his potential is somewhere between Shawntae Spencer and Johnathan Joseph.

ATL FORECAST:

Carmichael could compete right away for the nickel cornerback position, although he would probably have an up and down rookie season if he held that role. But because of his athleticism, he could potentially fit well in the slot. Going forward, he would be a nice developmental guy that is probably not as big or physical as the Falcons want for a corner on the outside, but he has potential to be a Grimes-like player down the road if he continues to progress.

VALUE:

Carmichael's upside makes him worth a look in the latter half of the second round, but he might be a better value in the third round.
