Notre Dame Senior
40: 4.50 (estimated)
Does a good job keeping things in front of him. Works well in off coverage. Shows ability to undercut a route and break up a pass. Does a nice job in run support on the edge, able to cut a back's legs or break up a screen.
Doesn't have great footwork. Tends to slide rather than backpedal in order to get depth. Doesn't have good hips and struggles to turn and run with fast receivers.
Wall is a nice corner that competes, but just doesn't have the hips or skills to match up against quality receivers in man coverage. He sat out the 2008 season for personal reasons. He was a three-year starter that combined for 5 career interceptions and 19 pass breakups. Had his most productive season as a senior with 3 picks.
Walls has a chance to land a reserve spot in the pros, but only if he can compete on special teams. His footwork and poor hips just will make it too hard for him to make any sort of impact on defense. His best chance is if he gets picked up by a team that plays a lot of zone coverage. There his limitations won't be so apparent, and he has a chance to compete in that scheme because he has good size, can contribute in run support, and a pretty smart defender. But he's not a guy that even if he goes to such a team is going to do much besides be a fourth or fifth corner his first few years. His upside on defense is too limited, and perhaps three or four years down the road he might make a serviceable nickel corner for that team.
Walls is a bad fit here in Atlanta because he doesn't have the skills to match up in man coverage. Instead, all he could do was compete in camp and push for time. He'd only be a practice squad candidate, only would make that if he really impressed on special teams. He has the toughness the Falcons coaches like for a defensive back, but he is just too limited to be an option on defense. He'd be lucky to last two summers.
Walls isn't worth a pick for a team, even a zone-heavy team. Not unless that team was really desperate for cornerback depth, and even then he would only be worth drafting at the very end of the seventh round. He's more valuable being signed as an undrafted free agent.
