BRIAN DUNCAN
6-1/235
Texas Tech Senior
40: 4.89

PROS:

Shows ability to wrap up and make stop in pursuit. Willing to take on lead blocker in the hole and can win the battle. Gets extension and can shed block to make the stop at the point of attack. Plays with a nice motor and gives chase. Has a quick first step when he lines up in a two-point stance or when he puts his hand in the dirt. Flashes burst upfield to beat the tackle around the edge. Flashes short-area power to deliver jolt to tackle off the edge.

CONS:

Doesn't have great speed and struggles to run down scrambling quarterbacks and runners in space. Will miss on some stops in pursuit and doesn't close quickly enough at times. Is limited in coverage as he rarely works there and even when he does, lacks the burst and fluidity you'd like to see. Will lose outside contain and bite on the misdirection on the edge. Tends to rely on his speed and burst as a pass rusher rather than using any moves or his hands to disengage. Tries to run around blocks at times as a pass rusher.

OVERVIEW:

Duncan is short and squat without great speed. But he is a capable pass rusher that has some future there. He isn't a perfect fit in any scheme because of his lack of ideal size and speed, but he has experience playing across the board at Texas Tech which should help him. His last season he showcased his pass-rushing ability with 63 tackles, 12 for loss, and 7 sacks playing a bit of a hybrid defensive/outside linebacker role in their 3-4 defense. Spent previous two seasons at middle linebacker where he combined for 182 tackles, 9.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks, 3 INTs, and 10 PBUs. Started most of his freshman year as well with nice production (69-4.0-0.0).

NFL FORECAST:

Duncan has the pass-rushing ability to play outside in a 3-4, but doesn't have quite the size you want there. He can also play inside in a 3-4 as well, and potentially there his lack of ideal speed and range would be more effective. But he's not quite instinctual a linebacker as you'd hope given his past as a MLB. But at either position, he'll need to bulk up. If he was 250 and running in the 4.8 range, that could be OK. But at 235, that sort of speed is mediocre at best. Playing outside is probably the best thing for him since he won't have as many opportunities to drop in coverage. While he can be a nice pass rusher, he'll never be a dynamic guy since he doesn't have the speed and burst to beat NFL starting tackles as easily as he did collegiate ones. He needs time to get bigger and stronger, develop more as a pass rusher and add moves, and also get better in coverage. That's a lot of work and with little upside, it's going to be hard for teams to be patient with him to allow him to develop. He might have difficulty sticking at the next level for those reasons. He'll have to contribute early on special teams. If he can do that, then he could be a comparable player to someone like Parys Haralson down the road and decent stopgap starter on the outside. But he's mainly a role player at best.

ATL FORECAST:

Duncan isn't a great fit in Atlanta because he's not as fast or rangy to really like him as a linebacker, and too small to be an end. He coudl play the SAM spot, but he'd be a project due to his issues in coverage and lack of range. Unless he shined on special teams, he'd be hard-pressed to be anything more than a body in Atlanta.

VALUE:

For a 3-4 team looking for some developmental depth, he might be worth a look in the seventh round.
