JUSTIN BOREN
6-3/311
Ohio State Senior
40: 5.26

PROS:

Plays with nice pop and is able to get position as a run blocker. Shows ability to get extension and lock on there. Able to wall off defender and shows some potential as a drive blocker. Initiates contact in pass protection. Plays with good base there and doesn't give up ground against the power rush. Shows ability to get to the second level and get the seal against the linebacker.

CONS:

Not very athletic and has slow, stiff feet. Struggles in pass protection when asked to block on an island against a quicker defender. Bends waist a bit too much and will get overextended. Doesn't adjust well in space and whiff on some blocks. Lacks mobility and not that good when he's pulling or out in front on a screen. Takes a false step or two on occasion as a run blocker and comes out a bit at times in short-yardage. Doesn't consistently get much push as a run blocker.

OVERVIEW:

Boren is a capable run blocker that matches up well against power, but is not a fluid athlete and struggles when facing speed. Boren is interesting because he is the son of Michigan alumni, was raised in Columbus, went to Michigan and then transferred to Ohio State. He started 14 games at guard and center during his first two years at Michigan, but then transferred after Lloyd Carr was fired. Started 24 games at left guard the past two years at Ohio State.

NFL FORECAST:

Boren is a good college player that may not translate as easily to the next level. His footwork and lack of athleticism are his biggest drawbacks, but he makes up for it with toughness and ability as a run blocker. He'll just struggle at the next level because he'll be facing defensive tackles that are much better athletes than he. I think eventually he can be a capable starter, but that's several years down the road. INstead, he projects much better as depth. You like his experience playing either side of the line and also working at center as well. So he can add depth and be a good option there. If he can improve and polish his technique, he stands a chance. But more than likely, he'll likely ride the pine his first two or three seasons, then challenge for a starting job. He might be one of those players that is a backup for the team that drafts him and then manages to become a capable, albeit not great starter with his second team. A comparison I would make is someone like Roberto Garza.

ATL FORECAST:

Boren can add depth here in Atlanta. He is a capable in a short area, but when you get him on the move and ask him to use his athleticism, he becomes very limited. More than likely, he can fill a role as a reserve guard and center here in Atlanta, and if he shows enough ability and develop then he's a guy that can be active on Sundays in the rotation because of the depth he provides. But I don't see him developing as a starter here in Atlanta except maybe as a stopgap for a year or so.

VALUE:

Boren is worth a late round pick. Because he can provide depth, he is worthy of a fifth or sixth round pick.
