KYLE HIX
6-7/318
Texas Senior
40: 5.46

PROS:

Shows pretty good strength and uses his hands. Able to get position as a run blocker. Can lock and shows leg drive to move the pile somewhat. Does a good job finishing his blocks. Can get the seal on the second level against the linebacker. Does a good job in a short-area in pass protection, initiating contact and showing the ability to lock on with his punch.

CONS:

Has poor feet and struggles when he's on an island or in space. Can be slow on his set up and struggles matching up with speed. Whiffs on his punch and is too much of a waist bender, causing him to get overextended too often and lose his balance. Gives up the quick, inside move or can't get deep enough and speed rusher blows right by him. Needs to take better angles when he's trying to make the kick out block, unable to lock on and get position. Is not fluid when asked to pull and lumbers.

OVERVIEW:

Hix is an effective run blocker at tackle in Texas zone blocking scheme. He can get position and shows some potential to get push and move the pile. But he's a limited athlete and gets exposed much too often when blocking on an island in pass protection. He'll likely have to move inside to guard, where he has the potential to compete in both a man or zone blocking system. A three-year starter that logged 28 starts at right tackle before moving to left tackle as a senior, starting 11 games.

NFL FORECAST:

Hix was miscast on the left side. He was much more effective on the right side. He can play tackle in a zone-blocking scheme, but I don't think he'd be good there. And he would just be backup-level talent since he'd struggle mightily as a starter going up against quality NFL left ends. Instead, his future is a bit brighter if you move him inside to guard. He is good in a short area, and his limitations athletically will be less apparent. He needs to be polished up there, but he has the potential to be a decent player and potentially a starter as a guard. I think with development, he can be comparable to Harvey Dahl there. He'll likely develop as a guard that sits the bench for two or three years, splitting reps at both guard and tackle before he can really be expected to push for a starting job. More than likely, he'll be a career backup. But I could imagine four or five years down the road, if he improves his technique and polishes up his game, he could make a competent stopgap starter for a few seasons.

ATL FORECAST:

Hix can add depth and be a long-term developmental guy at guard. He is comparable in terms of talent level as Garrett Reynolds. But since Reynolds has had time to develop, Hix wouldn't be likely to push him out of a job. INstead, he'd land a practice squad spot for a year or two, and then potentially take over as a reserve player. He can add value as a reserve because of his experience and ability to play multiple positions. Down the road, he might push for a starting job, but more than likely if the Falcons turn to him, they have no other options. He could get by as a starter, but probably only if he's surrounded by superior players at center and tackle.

VALUE:

Hix can add depth for a team and merits a look in the sixth or seventh round.
