BARON BATCH
5-10/207
Texas Tech Senior
40: 4.50

PROS:

Shows nice power for his size and not afraid to jam it up the middle. Runs with nice pad level to run over defensive backs and will deliver blow to defender when he can get downhill. Shows some shiftiness in the hole with nice lateral burst out of his cuts. Shows nice hands to adjust to the throw in the flat and can make the defender miss in space or get downhill. Willing to step up and pick up the blitz.

CONS:

Doesn't play with great vision, and not a guy that is going to create a lot on the second level. Won't bounce plays outside and doesn't really have ideal size and power to be effective between the tackles. Doesn't get a ton of work in pass protection.

OVERVIEW:

Batch is a bit undersized, but has decent power for his size. He's a guy that can eventually contribute on third downs as a reserve, but lacks the upside to really be more than a situational guy. Was their leading running back in each of the past three seasons where he combined for 458 carries, 2458 yards (5.4 avg), and 26 touchdowns. Also caught 134 passes for another 1070 yards and 5 more scores. Suffered an Achilles injury during his freshman year in 2006, missing most of that season and all of the following year.

NFL FORECAST:

Batch's maximum upside is to be a player comparable to someone like Mewelde Moore. I would say CHester Taylor, but Batch has more limitations as a runner than Taylor did. If he can prove himself in pass protection and as a receiver on third downs, he can add value to a roster. He's a nice runner, but won't be great at the next level. He's more the guy that you have spell the starter for a few carries per game, rather than having the ability to carry the load or the upside to be a guy that is an integral part of the rushing attack. For the most part, he's a potential No. 3 running back moreso than an ideal No. 2. He's more of a journeyman guy that is good enough for the practice squad, but not a guy that has the offensive upside to stick long-term on the roster. If he proves himself capable on third downs and on special teams, then he stands a better chance of sticking. But he's not powerful or explosive enough to really be a guy that coaches covet even though he has the potential to be dependable. He's one of those guys that can play in the NFL, but he'll never be truly appreciated because there will always be more talented players to be had around him.

ATL FORECAST:

Batch can play in Atlanta, but he'll have a hard time sticking long-term unless he proves himself to be a strong option on third down due to his blocking and pass-catching ability. He's not a playmaker. He is good enough to push for the No. 3 job, but is more in line with practice squad talent. A year or two down the road he can move up the depth chart, but only if other guys like Snelling or Turner vacate spots ahead of him. He's more in line with the talent like an Antone Smith that is a good replacement player, but a guy that isn't quite good enough to be much more than a decent No. 3 for a few seasons.

VALUE:

For a team liking his potential on third downs, he might merit a late look in the seventh round, but otherwise he's undrafted talent.
