6-4/305 Grambling State
Pros: Has good size and strength and shows potential at the point of attack. Has some quickness to shoot gaps and put pressure on the quarterback. Is a decent bull rusher that has a decent swim move.
Cons: Has a poor motor and mostly inconsistent. Only seems to go through the motions vs. the run and only seems partly interested when it's a passing down. Quickness is inconsistent. Doesn't get off blocks well. Can't make plays in pursuit. Doesn't break down well in the backfield when he does get penetration and QBs just sidestep him.
Overview: Basically he has an NFL body but doesn't have an NFL motor. A three-year starter that exploded with a big senior year. As a sophomore and junior, combined for 33 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. As a senior, had 32 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks.
NFL Forecast: Unless he works much harder, he's not going to stick. He's the type of player that could dominate NFL Europa when he wants to, but unless he can excel in the UFL, he's not going to get a shot. His motor is really the only thing holding him back. He needs to be more consistent and play up to his ability. Seems to only go through the motions, and unless that changes, he'll get right through the motions out of the league.
ATL Forecast: Matthews would have a shot as a backup 3-technique player here in Atlanta. But I doubt he sticks. Worth a shot hoping to capitalize on his athletic potential, but it's doubtful he'd work hard enough to make the roster.
Value: His poor motor makes him undraftable.
