Pros: He has decent hands and is a capable receiver on the short routes. Is a decent blocker in space, using his size well.
Cons: Lacks speed and quickness to challenge a defense vertically. Body catches too often. Lacking as an inline blocker and needs to add strength and play with more pop off the snap.
Overview: He has NFL size, but plays more like he's 235 pounds than 255. Started career as a defensive end at Vanderbilt, but upon transferring to Ohio after two seasons was moved to tight end. Production only slightly increased when Mooney was injured.
NFL Forecast: I don't see him sticking on the next level, unless he can improve as a blocker. He needs to get stronger there and refine his technique. But I doubt he'll ever become a good enough blocker to even merit a No. 2 job. As a receiver, he's capable but not really going to do much to challenge defenses. He's the classic guy that can bounce around the league as a No. 3 tight end, but has a hard time sticking. Basically he's Jason Rader, but not as good a blocker as Rader was coming out of school.
ATL Forecast: The Falcons have already tried valiantly twice with the Jason Rader experience. And there is no reason to swing and miss a third time with Carter for the team. He'll be a marginal No. 3 guy that can hold the spot for a year, but eventually the team will find a better option, just like they did with Rader.
Value: He's worth an invite to camp as a free agent, but drafting him would be a mistake.
