I assume this means Kelly Herndon will be going elsewhere...
The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have re-signed CB Kevin Mathis and FB Fred McCrary. Terms of the contracts were not announced.
Mathis, 5-9, 185 pounds, is a nine-year veteran from Texas A&M-Commerce. Mathis has played the last three seasons in Atlanta after beginning his career with the Dallas Cowboys in 1997. In 2004, Mathis started the most games of his Falcons career and the most since 2001 in New Orleans with 12. He finished with 67 tackles -- sixth-highest on the team -- two interceptions and six passes defensed. Mathis became only the second player in Falcons history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same season last year when he recorded a 35-yard touchdown return at Carolina (October 3) and a 66-yarder at Denver (October 31). The two touchdowns gave him three in his Falcons career, which tied Deion Sanders for the most in team history.
In three Falcons seasons, Mathis has totaled 114 tackles, six interceptions and nine passes defensed in 40 games played with 15 starts. For his career, Mathis is a veteran of 107 games with 55 starts and has totaled 360 tackles, 11 interceptions and 40 passes defensed.
McCrary, 6-0, 247 pounds, is a nine-year veteran from Mississippi State. McCrary was signed by the Falcons on December 15, 2004 after injuries to fullbacks Stanley Pritchett and George Layne. McCrary started the final two regular season games and both playoff contests. At Seattle (1/2/05) in the season finale, McCrary helped open holes for RB Warrick Dunn's 132 yards rushing and a team total of 204 yards. In the Falcons 47-17 Divisional Playoff victory over the St. Louis Rams, he helped pave the way for an offense that set an NFL postseason record with 327 rushing yards, including a Falcon record 142 yards by Dunn and a NFL record for quarterbacks with 119 yards by Michael Vick. McCrary caught two passes for 23 yards for the Falcons in 2004.
