Mayock: Khalil Mack would be my No. 1 overall pick

A Mid-American Conference player went first in the 2013 draft, and if NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock had his way, a MAC player would go No. 1 in 2014, too.

Appearing on Minneapolis radio station KFAN on Friday morning, Mayock said he would take Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack first overall. Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher was the No. 1 pick in the '13 draft.

"He's explosive off the edge, he's tough, he's twitchy, he's got a little edge about him," Mayock said of Mack.

Buffalo opened the season with a loss to Ohio State, but Mayock said that when he watched tape of that game, "[Mack] dominated Ohio State like nobody I've ever seen dominate them."

Mayock also said that Mack is "really a good kid off the field" as well.

"You talk about a kid like [Jadeveon] Clowney, who's just got superhuman abilities, versus this kid, and if I had a choice between the two, I think I'm taking Mack," Mayock said.

Mayock said Mack is a prototype outside linebacker in a 3-4, but that he also would fit as a "Sam" linebacker in a 4-3, and would really shine in pass-rush situations.

Mack was listed at 6-foot-3 and 248 pounds at Buffalo. His official weigh-in at the NFL Scouting Combine comes Saturday.

Mack set an NCAA career record with 16 forced fumbles and is tied for first in NCAA history with 75 tackles for loss; he is tied with former Western Michigan defensive end Jason Babin, who started for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013. Mack also had 28.5 career sacks. Mack has been compared with Denver Broncos sack specialist Von Miller.

The more I read about Mack and think on our situation, I think he makes the most sense for us at this point. We need a dynamic playmaker on defense at his position and a chance to keep the rest of our picks. Clowney may be a superstar, but Mack will be a pro-bowler as well. He's separated himself as an ideal athlete and character guy who has proven production and measureables.

With FA, we can address the need at RG, DT, and perhaps get another pass-rusher. Then drafting Mack will be a bonus that will give us multiple options to attack offenses. We can also draft an OT later in the draft to give us more options on the OL.

I think Mack and Clowney are both far from locks to be superstars and pro bowlers. One had only 3 sacks last year, and the other played for Buffalo which is a joke of a program. I think the two top tackles are far safer picks, then we could spend our FA money on a DE that has proven they can do it at this level. With that said, I wouldn't be upset if we took either Mack or Clowney, I just consider them to be higher risks than the tackles.

The tape against Baylor is far from impressive. What I have seen from watching film on Mack is that he gets a lot of pressures that are very close to being sacks but the corners lost very quickly against better WRs.

I watched 6 games of Mack's (most on Draft Breakdown.com) and that Baylor game is the only "bad" tape, although they got behind early and Baylor's QB has a pretty quick trigger which prevented Mack from getting 2-3 pressures. Not to mention Buffalo played him off the line quite a bit in that game, which is not his strength.

Even in games where he is held without a sack, he usually gets 4+ pressures/hurries, always a good sign when you are facing lesser competition.

As for the "safety" of a pick, there's no such thing. I find it funny that last year at this time, people were comparing Fisher and Joeckel to Joe Thomas, but then after having underwhelming rookie seasons, all of a sudden neither of them are on par with this year's 3rd best tackle. Trent Richardson and Aaron Curry prove that even the "safest" prospects are a gamble.

Call it safe or whatever word you want, there is a risk reward with any draft pic, and while the potential for Clowney to be great is higher than anyone in this draft, I think the chance of him being a bust is greater than either of the two lineman, especially Matthews.
