Team Needs: San Diego Chargers
NEEDS RATING KEY
5.0 - High priority. This is a position that is a glaring weakness and there is the likelihood that this team cannot compete next year without making a major addition here.
4.0 - Medium Priority. This is an area that is an obvious weakness, but the team isn't quite desperate to make a major move here possibly because they have some young potential. But this is an area that if the team cannot fix via free agency, will definitely use one of their picks in the first three or four rounds to supplement.
3.0 - Upgrade Potential. This is a position that isn't a weakness per se, but there is significant room for an upgrade. If the right player comes along they will certainly snag him, but if they don't fix this position with a major free agent addition or early round pick, then it's not the end of the world.
2.0 - Depth Need. An area where there is a need to add depth. Perhaps there is an aging veteran and they might want to start to look at grooming his heir apparent or replacement. Not likely to be a high priority and a position that more than likely will be address in the middle and late rounds rather than with a top pick.
1.0 - Future Need. This is an area that is not a priority, and doesn't initially appear as a need. But there is some room to develop some depth for perhaps two or more years down the line. This is usually an area that a team will look at in the late rounds if at all.
0.0 - Non-need. This is a position that is a strength of their team, they have a solid starter, capable depth, and/or a young player at the position that they like and want to develop. Very little possibility this area is addressed and would be the equivalent of a wasted draft pick.
Top 10 Needs
1. OG - 3.5
2. WR - 3.5
3. CB - 3.5
4. S - 3.0
5. DE - 3.0
6. OT - 3.0
7. LB - 2.5
8. TE - 2.5
9. RB - 2.0
10. DT - 1.5
Quarterback - Rivers had a down year, but they expect him to bounce back if he can get more consistency from his playmakers. Billy Volek is a capable backup, but it's time to start looking to develop a replacement for the soon-to-be 36-year old entering the final year of his contract. NEED: 1.5
Running Back - Ryan Mathews was solid when healthy, and Mike Tolbert is a good situational player, but he's also a free agent. If they lose him, then finding a viable No. 2 option will become a bigger priority. NEED: 2.0
Fullback - Jacob Hester is a free agent, but one they want back and should be able to re-sign because he's a valuable role player. NEED: 1.0
Wide Receiver - Vincent Jackson is a player they want to keep but won't pay a fortune to do so, plus with the demand he could get on the open market could lead to him leaving since they can't tag him. Malcom Floyd is a decent No. 2 and Vincent Brown is coming along as a reserve. But if they lose Jackson, finding someone that can be a future No. 1 option will be a priority. NEED: 3.5
Tight End - Antonio Gates started to show his age, and they need to find a better heir apparent than Kory Sperry. NEED: 2.5
Offensive Tackle - Marcus McNeill may not be back due to injury issues, and if that's the case then re-signing Jared Gaither will be a huge priority, otherwise they will be left without a quality left tackle. Jeromey Clary is a competent right tackle that they want to upgrade, but given their other priorities will probably live with him for another year. NEED: 3.0
Offensive Guard - Kris Dielman's concussion issues are leading him to retire, leaving a hole at left guard that they will need to fill. Tyronne Green just hasn't done much in his two seasons as a reserve guard and is a better fit at center. NEED: 3.5
Center - Nick Hardwick is solid, but is a free agent and with Dielman's retirement, keeping him will likely become a bigger priority. Scott Mruczkowski and Green are developmental options behind him. NEED: 1.5
Defensive Tackle - Antonio Garay is solid in the middle, but a free agent and they want to bring him back. If they don't, they have the option of Cam Thomas waiting in the wings. If they lose Garay, they'll likely add another body to the mix, but it likely won't be a high priority since they have Thomas. NEED: 1.5
Defensive End - Luis Castillo has underachieved the past few years and might become a cap cut. Corey Liuget didn't have a great rookie year, but between him and Vaughn Martin they have some young bodies here. But finding someone that can consistently get pressure on the QB from this spot. NEED: 3.0
Linebacker - Larry English has been a disappointment, but they got good production from Antwan Barnes opposite Shaun Phillips. They will always be looking for good pass rushers on the outside. Takeo Spikes and Donald Butler are a solid pair in the middle, but they will likely be looking to develop an heir apparent to Spikes who might only have one or two more years left in the tank. NEED: 2.5
Cornerback - Quentin Jammer is entering the final year of his contract, and Antoine Cason hasn't had the consistency to think he's ready to take over as a No. 1 corner. Marcus Gilchrist was benched midway through his rookie year, and thus they need to continue bolstering their depth. Finding someone that has the potential to replace Jammer as their No. 1 corner would be a good move. NEED: 3.5
Safety - They need to find a good strong safety to team with Weddle, since the Bob Sanders experiment didn't work out. They drafted Darrell Stuckey a few years ago to be this guy, but he's yet to make a major contribution. But they still like his potential, but if they can upgrade this spot in the draft with a good strong safety, they will jump all over him. NEED: 3.0
Kicker - Nick Novak was inconsistent as an injury replacement for Nate Kaeding. Kaeding is coming off ACL injury and entering the final year of his deal. He's been productive, but might not the most consistent so there is the potential they look at other options. NEED: 1.5
Punter - Mike Scifres is one of the best punters in the league that was given an extension in September. NEED: 0.0
Return Specialist - Richard Goodman was solid kickoff returner, but they could use some more production out of the punt returner unless they put Antoine Cason back there. NEED: 1.5
