Team Needs: New York Jets

NEEDS RATING KEY

5.0 - High priority. This is a position that is a glaring weakness and there is the likelihood that this team cannot compete next year without making a major addition here.

4.0 - Medium Priority. This is an area that is an obvious weakness, but the team isn't quite desperate to make a major move here possibly because they have some young potential. But this is an area that if the team cannot fix via free agency, will definitely use one of their picks in the first three or four rounds to supplement.

3.0 - Upgrade Potential. This is a position that isn't a weakness per se, but there is significant room for an upgrade. If the right player comes along they will certainly snag him, but if they don't fix this position with a major free agent addition or early round pick, then it's not the end of the world.

2.0 - Depth Need. An area where there is a need to add depth. Perhaps there is an aging veteran and they might want to start to look at grooming his heir apparent or replacement. Not likely to be a high priority and a position that more than likely will be address in the middle and late rounds rather than with a top pick.

1.0 - Future Need. This is an area that is not a priority, and doesn't initially appear as a need. But there is some room to develop some depth for perhaps two or more years down the line. This is usually an area that a team will look at in the late rounds if at all.

0.0 - Non-need. This is a position that is a strength of their team, they have a solid starter, capable depth, and/or a young player at the position that they like and want to develop. Very little possibility this area is addressed and would be the equivalent of a wasted draft pick.

Top 10 Needs

1. WR - 4.0
2. S - 4.0
3. OT - 4.0
4. LB - 4.0
5. QB - 3.0
6. CB - 3.0
7. OG - 3.0
8. TE - 2.5
9. K - 2.5
10. DE - 2.5

Quarterbacks - They are looking to bring in a veteran to push Mark Sanchez. Mark Brunell, their top backup is a free agent and probably won't be back. Greg McElroy's postseason comments haven't endeared the coaching staff to him, so they might also look at drafting a prospect to develop as well. NEED: 3.0

Running Back - Tomlinson is a free agent and expected to retire. That will leave Shonn Greene as their lone guy. Bilal Pwell and Joe McKnight can provide some depth, but whether they can fill Tomlinson's shoes remains to be seen. But with Greene's improvement from a year ago, they probably won't push too hard to make a huge addition. NEED: 2.0

Fullback - John Conner is coming into his own as a lead blocker. NEED: 0.0

Wide REceiver - Santonio Holmes did not produce at a high level, and he's the primary player that most have indicated as the cancerous entity in the locker room. Burress is a free agent and not expected back with the Jets, which will cause them to try and find another big vertical threat that can provide the presence that Braylon Edwards had a year ago. NEED: 4.0

Tight End - Dustin Keller is entering the final year of his contract, and they are already looking to add some depth with a good blocking tight end. But they might also look at some guys that can catch as well to provide some insurance for the future. NEED: 2.5

Offensive Tackle - They missed Damien Woody at right tackle, as Wayne Hunter is a serviceable backup, but exposed as a starter. They will seek to make a major upgrade here. NEED: 4.0

Offensive Guard - Matt Slauson has been a decent stopgap due to the disappointing development of Vlad Ducasse, but he's coming off a shoulder injury. Brandon Moore has been solid for years, but he's entering a contract year and will be 32 this year, so it would be good to start grooming his replacement. THey will try to bolster this position. NEED: 3.0

Center - Nick Mangold is outstanding, but their lack of depth here was exposed early in the year. They should try and address that with a veteran. NEED: 2.0

Defensive Tackle - Re-signing Sione Pouha is a high priority for this team, and losing him would be a huge loss up front, since rookie Kenrick Ellis was a no-show last year. But if they keep him, they will continue to develop Ellis as his heir apparent. NEED: 1.5

Defensive End - They have a good rotation of young players led by Muhammad Wilkerson, but they could bolster this rotation with a veteran addition in free agency. NEED: 2.5

Linebacker - They got some nice production from Aaron Maybin, but they are looking for a much better crop of pass rushers coming off the edge. Bryan Thomas ended the year on IR with an Achilles injury, and thus it's likely they will try to use one of their higher picks to replace him with a promising young pass rusher. They also might want to look at grooming the heir apparent to Bart Scott on the inside. NEED: 4.0

Cornerback - Cromartie is still inconsistent, but a capable starter across from Revis. Kyle WIlson hasn't quite lived up to his draft status working in the nickel, and it's likely they will add a pick or free agent that can push him for that role and job. NEED: 3.0

Safety - Jim Leonhard is the leader of this group, but a free agent and due to his durability concerns might not be a high priority to re-sign. Brodney Pool, also a free agent isn't expected back iether. That leaves Eric Smith as their top safety, who is a good backup but lacking as a starer. They should be looking at adding two need starters here. NEED: 4.0

Kicker - Nick Folk is serviceable, but they could potentially upgrade him. He's a free agent and they could look in a different direction. NEED: 2.5

Punter - T.J. Conley had a solid first year with the Jets and they should be solid here for the time being. NEED: 0.5

Return Specialist - McKnight and Jeremy Kerley are a solid pair of returners. NEED: 0.5
