Private Workouts

Postby Pudge » Wed Apr 05, 2006 8:01 pm

NFL Draft Scout.com is reporting we have scheduled:

RB Maurice Drew, UCLA
OT Daryn Colledge, Boise State
RB Jerome Harrison, Washington State
CB Richard Marshall, Fresno State

all for private workouts. I would say Colledge & Marshall are definite Round 2 targets. Drew could be as well. Harrison would seem to be a 3rd round prospect.

Me thinks Harrison would be a 4th round picm IMO. He's a bit raw and undersized which of course means nothing to the Falcons. I guess I'm not enamored enough with Drew to spend a 3rd round pick. I'd rather have Harrison in the 4th.

Add D.J. Shockley to that group:

SI.com wrote:The Falcons may not have to look far to find a quarterback to round out the depth chart next season. Thursday, the team will bring in a pair of former Atlanta high school stars ? Georgia's D.J. Shockley and Alabama-Birmingham's Darrell Hackney ? for pre-draft workouts. Matt Schaub and Bryan Randall are the current backups to Pro Bowler Michael Vick, but the Falcons plan to sign another young quarterback, either in the late rounds of the NFL draft or through free agency.

Clemens could be a solid sleeper pick in the 4th or 5th round. He could probably replace Schuab without too many problems.

I've seen some mocks with him going much higher than the 4th. I wish he would fall to us in the late rounds, but it doesn't look like it'll happen.

Quarterback for the University of Oregon. I'd liken him to a Chris Chandler type quarterback. Good arm and accurate but has had a history of injuries.

Yeah, they are calling Clemens along with several other QBs really good fits for the WCO.

Clemens, Olson, and Meyer stand out in my mind as those types of QBs on Day 2. Gradkowski, Whitehurst, and Pinegar are others. IMO, these are the guys we should be looking at, not Shockley. I don't really have an issue with the team eyeing Hackney because I think he's immensely talented, at least much more than Shockley or any of the others we've supposedly gone after.

It would seem a definite the Falcons are going after a QB this year in the draft. Which one, I'm not sure. We've spoken with Meyer (at the Combine), worked out Clemens, Shockley, and Hackney. The fact that we haven't heard of a workout from Olson seems to indicate the team is confident in their knowledge of him (probably due to Cable) or not that interested.

I would note that Clemens never really played in a WCO offense. Belloti uses a quasi-WCO but it is very much a vertical passing game. The only reason it has any reference to a WCO type offense is because it builds off the run with plenty of PA passing. Clemens can hit the deep ball with good accuracy. Fortunately in the PAC 10 everyone is a vertical passing team so there is plenty of tape of Clemens tossing it deep. :)
