5-8/191 Florida State
Pros: Tough runner that runs hard between the tackles. Keeps his feet moving after contact and fights for extra yards. Is willing to throw his weight around as a blocker. Has nice hands with nice speed. A patient runner with some shiftiness, but primarily a north-south runner.
Cons: Lacks burner speed (not as fast as he times) and won't be a threat to run through many tackles at the NFL level. Lacks ideal lateral quickness, burst, and vision. Needs to improve in pass protection.
Overview: Smith is a nice fit as a third down back. He plays bigger than his size, which you like. Had 792 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior.
NFL Forecast: Smith is undersized for the NFL, but plays more like a 210-pounder than someone his size. He'd make a nice third down back, but unless he can become a more consistent blocker and receiver, then he'll be hard-pressed to stick. Because with players his size, teams prefer them to be home run threats. So his best chance of sticking will come by what he can do on special teams, at least initially. And in time, he could prove to be a capable second option in a team's rushing attack. But he's not the type of player that fits the ideal niches in the NFL. I could see him being a star on a lesser level of play. He runs hard which you like, but the lack of vision is going to ultimately hurt him and probably make his NFL career relatively short.
ATL Forecast: Smith would be a nice addition in Atlanta, but probably isn't an upgrade over Thomas Brown, making his chances of making the roster smaller. He's not a home run threat, which is probably what the Falcons would prefer to have as their third down back. He could stick on the practice squad, but it's doubtful he'd make any significant impact on the roster.
Value: Smith is worth a seventh round pick in terms of ability, but since he'll be hard-pressed to stick on an NFL roster, you're probably better off letting him go undrafted.
