Dorian Porch, SS, Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Senior

PROS: Has good speed and athleticism. Is quick to come up and defend the run and closes quickly on the ball. Does best work near the line of scrimmage. Can make the stop on the edge and also works well in pursuit. Is a capable tackler that gives good effort vs. the run and does a nice job wrapping up. Shows decent ball skills and potential in zone coverage.
CONS: Lacking in man coverage. Will overpursue at times and misses stops in the open field. Undersized and can improve as a tackler at the point of attack. Will tackle too high at times and can be overpowered by bigger backs and tight ends.
OVERVIEW: Is a good run stopper that doesn't give up many plays in coverage, but also doesn't make very many plays. He started 18 games the past two years at strong safety, splitting reps with Davon Morgan there. Combined for 3 sacks, 2 picks, and 7 passes defended.
NFL FORECAST: I don't think he has the upside to start, particularly since he doesn't do much in coverage. But I think he can work as a capable backup strong safety on the next level, particularly if he proves himself on special teams. You just don't see enough potential for development in coverage for you to like his chances to impact there. But he's a nice run stopper, albeit a bit undersized that doesn't make many mistakes, but also doesn't make very many plays. With the right development, four or five years down the road, he might develop into a competent stopgap starter, but nobody is going to want him to be a starter.
ATL FORECAST: He has a chance to stick in Atlanta if he can impact right away on special teams. He would make a decent backup to Moore at strong safety, but lacks the upside to really like him as a developmental option. But if he can prove himself on special teams, he coudl give a player like Giordano a run for his money because both players give good effort and show toughness vs. the run. But they are similar players with his career being guided by his ability to impact on special teams.
VALUE: Because of his value as depth and special teams potential, Porch would make a decent late round pick. I wouldn't take him before the sixth round.
