CHRIS HAWKINS
6-0/187
LSU Senior
40: 4.42

PROS: Has a good feel and shows awareness in zone coverage. Does a nice job when he can keep things in front of him. Reads the quarterback and breaks quickly on the ball, showing good ball skills. Willing in run support and able to work work in the slot.
CONS: Struggles at the point of attack in run support, and lacking as a tackler. Has poor hips and struggles in man coverage. Despite size, not a factor in press coverage due to inability to turn and run with receivers.
OVERVIEW: He replaced Chevis Jackson as the starter at LSU, and like Jackson is a good zone corner. But he's limited in man coverage. In two season as a starter, he combined for 93 tackles, 5 picks, and 16 passes defended.
NFL FORECAST: Hawkins might have to move to safety. There just aren't as many zone-heavy teams in the league anymore to think he could compete even as a reserve. He could work in a Tampa-2 scheme, but only as a reserve. If he can bulk up and put on 10-15 pounds, he could make a decent option as a reserve safety. He'll never be a great run stopper, and would be a liability if he was asked to play extensive minutes on defense. But his potential value is on special teams in coverage rather than defense. If he can stick early on special teams, then he stands a chance to be given the time to develop. But he'll be hard-pressed sticking right away. Give him a year or two on a practice squad to add muscle and get used to playing safety, and he might be able to then make a roster as a fourth or fifth safety.
ATL FORECAST: Hawkins isn't as good as Jackson was, who is already on the outs in Atlanta. So it's doubtful Hawkins would be in any better position to make the roster.
VALUE: He's not worth a draft pick, but could be brought to camp to push for time.
