PROS: Shows good potential as a blitzer and is able to deliver the hit to the passer. Does his best work when he's attacking the line of scrimmage.
CONS: Lacks speed and struggles when working in space. Will miss stops in the open field against quicker backs. Doesn't change direction well and lacks burst. Limited impact in pursuit.
OVERVIEW: Carmichael is a limited defender that really lacks the speed and burst to do much on defense. He's a special teams option at best there. He might have to convert to playing fullback to have a chance to stick on the next level. A three-year starter that finished career with 32.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions. Forced 6 fumbles as a senior.
NFL FORECAST: He could get a look from some 3-4 teams that like their inside linebackers to rush the quarterback, but he's too limited in coverage and lacks speed to really have a chance to stick there. Instead, to actually get minutes on a team, he mgiht have to move to offense. His size and physical style of play should make for a nice conversion. It won't be easy, but he has the physical demeanor to do it. But even if he can, he's at best a backup that plays mainly special teams and will be limited if he ever is asked to play extensive minutes on offense. Either way, his ability stick on a roster will be tied to his special teams ability.
ATL FORECAST: Carmichael isn't a good bet to stick in Atlanta unless he wows the coaches with his special teams ability off the bat. He just doesn't have the upside to think he's going to develop much either on offense or defense, and isn't an upgrade over any of the backups at inside linebacker or fullback that the team already has on the roster. He's more a camp body in Atlanta.
VALUE: A team looking for someone tough and physical to bolster special teams should invite him to camp.
