Pros: Has decent size and gets off the ball quickly. He has good quickness and a good burst off the ball to get into the OT’s pads and has good edge speed for the speed rush. He shows good ability to dip his shoulder to get the edge and knows how to close on the QB. He has a good swim and rip move along with his speed rush, and flashes good hand usage at times. Is a decent tackler and has a good motor.

Cons: Does not offer much versus the run at all. He can shed blocks from TE’s but when he goes against an offensive lineman he is usually engulfed and he struggles to shed blocks versus the run and doesn’t do a good job of shedding versus the run either. He could stand to improve his hand usage a whole lot, and needs to get stronger and play with better leverage if he has any hope of developing into a starting DE in the NFL. Not a great tackler and will miss on tackles in the backfield.

Overall: Alem looks like a situational pass rusher in the NFL to me. He has some potential to develop into a starter because of his pass rushing ability, but at this point he is largely a liability against the run. He can offer pass rushing off the bench early in his career because he has good edge speed and does a pretty good job of recognizing when the OT opens his hips too early to beat him with an inside move, but outside of situational pass rushing help he won’t offer much early in his career. If he can get stronger and improve his hand usage he might develop into a better player at the point of attack. But until that day he will be a situational pass rusher. His ceiling is a solid starter if he can develop versus the run, but his floor is a situational pass rusher who offers 2-3 sacks a year from a #4 DE role.

Projection: 5th round: He may go in the 4th round, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he fell this far because he doesn’t have a high ceiling like other pass rushers that may go before him. His ceiling is really just a situational pass rusher that develops enough versus the run that he can play every down and have a decent impact. That’s not a player that you pick in the 3rd or 4th round, but come the 5th round getting a guy who can contribute as a one dimensional pass-rusher for his first season or two is more attractive.

SKILLS
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

STRENGTH: 2.5
QUICKNESS: 3.5
PASS RUSH: 3.5
POINT OF ATTACK: 2.0
RECOGNITION: 3.0
MOTOR: 3.5
