Texas A&M Senior
40: 5.27 (Campus)
PROS: Gets his hands up quickly and engages defender. Physical and scrappy and can get position. Does a nice job on the second level taking out linebackers. Shows ability to pull. Plays with good base and shows nice lateral footwork and technique. Works well out of the shotgun.
CONS: Lacks strength and power and can't push the pile. Lacks great feet and can be a bit stiff in pass protection. Doesn't always stay locked on, and is not asked to block on an island very often.
OVERVIEW: The son of Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews has the NFL bloodlines (Clay is also his cousin). Obviously learned well from his dad as he has very polished technique. A two-year starter at A&M.
NFL FORECAST: He should become a solid NFL starter, although he doesn't have the strength and upside to appeal to all teams. He's a guy that will probably have to make his living in the NFC so he doesn't have to face 3-4 nose tackles which dominate in the AFC. For a team that wants a smart center, he will work as a starter. He'd fit best in a zone-blocking scheme that prizes smarts and qucikness over brute strength. I think he should have a nice long NFL career and be a capable starter, but won't be considered among the top guys in the league because he'll never be a mover in the running game. But in the right offense, one that focuses on the passing game, he should be a very valuable starter like a poor man's Jeff Saturday.
ATL FORECAST: Matthews is a player in the McClure mold that is a smart guy that will be an effective center, but won't be a pile mover. But he can be a smart center that should be able to develop into a solid starter. He won't be able to clear running lanes and will be a bit of a liability when asked to block top nose tackles. But he should work well with Ryan and the other blockers along the line. He has enough smarts that he could push and win the starting job if need be by his second season if McClure chose to retire.
VALUE: His polish means he should go as high as the late fifth or sixth round.
