Iowa State Senior
PROS: Has good strength and uses it well in a short area. Can lock on in pass protection and does a nice job finishing his blocks.
CONS: Needs to get his hands up quicker. Lacks quickness and mobility when asked to pull. Struggles taking out linebackers on the 2nd level because of his lack of quickness and inability to sustain blocks. Struggled working in the shotgun with low, inaccurate snaps.
OVERVIEW: He played center this past year after playing both guard spots earlier in his career. He is a better fit at guard.
NFL FORECAST: A team might like his size and potential as a powerful center, but he's overmatched there and doesn't have what it takes to play there in the pros. His experience at center will make him a versatile backup, but he'll be overmatched there if asked to start. He is a similar player to Philly's Nick Cole in that way. But despite his size, Stephens won't be as good a run blocker as Cole is at guard. He just doesn't have the great power despite his size, or athletic ability to do a lot on the next level. He can make a nice backup, but that's about it.
ATL FORECAST: He might be intriguing to some because of his size and potential to play the pivot, but he's not going to add much to the Falcons lineup. He could be a nice utility backup on the interior, but wouldn't be any better at it than Romberg or Ojinnaka. He might make the Falcons practice squad, but that's about it.
VALUE: Stephens shouldn't be drafted, but definitely worth a look in camp.
