Brooks Reed won't go on short-term IR

Postby Pudge » Mon Sep 07, 2015 10:26 am

It was reported Sunday that Brooks Reed would go on short-term I.R. due to the groin injury that is expected to keep him out for 6 weeks, but the team announced today that was not the case.

That means that the Falcons are basically going to go with 52 players. Thoughts?

In the NFL....you need all the available players you can get. Unless he's only out for two weeks its a blunder by Quinn and company.

Yeah, this is a strange one. Perhaps they expect him to recover more quickly than was originally expected?

My thinking is that they won't to blow their wad on using the short-term IR right off the bat in the season. Since you can only use it 1x per year, they might find themselves in situations like they've been the last 2 years with Willy Mo & Spoon, where a key player a month into the season has a major injury but not a season-ending one, and they don't want to sit him for the entire season (thanks to the hopes of a soft schedule down the stretch & making a playoff run) as well needing the extra body on the roster that putting that guy on short-term IR frees up.

Early in the season, you can gamble a bit more with rolling with 52 players since most of them are going to be a lot healthier in September than they will be in November and December.
