74 players under contract, but in less than a week that will be whittled down to 53. Here are the 21 players I see getting the axe by Sunday:
RB DeAndra Cobb - Mora indicated in Tues. PC that Rossum right now is the Kickoff guy, and he didn't mention Cobb at all, but rather Roddy White. IMO, Cobb's lone shot of making the roster was if he was the kickoff return guy.
FB Kevin Dudley - I'm surprised he lasted this long.
WR Brian Bratton - Seems like he's a better person than player.
WR Romby Bryant - only stuck because he's an exemption.
WR Will Pettis - I know the team likes his speed and ST ability, he has a better shot than most people think of beating out Magner IMO. But he still won't do it.
TE Eric Beverly - thank heaven.
TE Mark Anelli - has good hands, but Peck moving to TE definitely didn't help him.
OT Shawn Draper - see Bryant.
OT Frank Omiyale - good potential, but not quite there yet. A sure bet for p-squad.
OG Austin King - lost #2 center job to Pearson.
OC Dave Pearson - without Lehr on the roster, no need for 3 centers.
OC Mike Mabry - see Draper.
DT Anthony Herron - has good quickness, but not better than Babs. Look for him to be brought back if the team sees injuries.
DT Darrell Shropshire - has good upside for future, but not quite there yet.
LB Jordan beck (IR) - done for the year.
LB John Leake - has ST potential, but not ahead of Cash.
LB Mike Brown - see Leake.
CB Byron Jones - possible p-squadder, but outplayed by college teammate Buhl.
CB James Thornton - see Mabry.
S Shawn Mayer - good run stopper, but not quite good enough. He's good enough to stick somewhere in the NFL, just timing wasn't right for ATL.
S Cam Newton - could be p-squadder as he plays the ball well.
That means Magner, Marlion Jackson, Glymph, Cash, and Buhl all make the roster, once considered longshots. I think Jackson sticks because the team needs help on ST, but won't last the entire year on the active roster. Glymph will only stick around until Brady Smith is truly 100%. Cash, Buhl, and Magnerw ill have to make early contributions on ST coverage or they will replaced by guys like Michael Brown, Byron Jones, and Pettis.
Here's my practice squad:
RB DeAndra Cobb WR Will Pettis OT Frank Omiyale DT Darrell Shropshire S Cam Newton DE Gabe Nyenhuis QB Bryan Randall Someone not in camp this summer
