Falcons likely won't meet with Schulters

The clouds are getting darker for Atlanta as it relates to signing the top free agent safety remaining in the NFL.

Lance Schulters, who was cut last week by the Tennessee Titans after the two sides could not work out a restructured contract, met last week with Miami. Schulters has yet to schedule a meeting with the Falcons; he might not need to.
Schulters missed 13 games last season with a foot injury, but reportedly is healthy now. The Atlanta Falcons have been at the least very thinking about signing him this off-season because of a perceived weakness at safety. Many thought the Falcons would address their need at the position during the 2005 NFL Draft, but the franchise did not select a safety during the two-day event.

It now appears, however, that Miami is close to signing Schulters; not only have the Dolphins met with Schulters, but reports at this time indicate that the Falcons are not as concentrated on him as they were earlier in the year. An ESPN report says the Falcons are not as “interested” as some observers think. Some think the Falcons would not interview Schulters even if the circumstances were different. Dallas, St. Louis and Detroit are also favorable toward signing the safety, but like Atlanta, none of them have met with Schulters.

Miami’s urgency for a safety increased last week on the same day they met with Schulters. Backup safety Quintin Williams was cut after he was arrested for drunk driving and drag racing on a Miami interstate. He was going 111 miles per hour.
