Lehr ahead of Moore at LG

George Henry of TSN wrote:In the battle to start at left guard, Matt Lehr has the lead over Michael Moore, but just slightly. Both players took turns working with the first-team offense during minicamp and organized team activities, but Moore performed well enough to remain a close No. 2 on the depth chart. Moore benefits from having worked the better part of three years in Alex Gibbs' system, so he understands what's expected of him: Cut-block defensive tackles on the back side and work accordingly with C Todd McClure to zone-block them on the front side. Unfortunately for Moore, durability concerns cloud his future. He tore a rotator cuff in the season opener last year and landed on injured reserve, a setback that left him with just two career starts and just one game played since the start of 2001. Lehr, 26, is two years younger and has far more upside with 22 career starts and 43 total appearances. Lehr, at 304, is listed 14 pounds lighter than Moore, and carrying less bulk will help him execute cut blocks once preseason games begin.

Moore is not a starting-caliber NFL guard. He has decent skills, good mobility, but lacks strength. He won't be able to battle with the DTs of the NFC South on a consistent basis. GUys like Booger McFarland, Chris Hovan, Kris Jenkins, Brentson Buckner, Brian Young, etc. will over match him. Lehr is not a reincarnation of Hercules for any matter, but he's just a better blocker, and plays smarter and has much more experience. Moore has started half a game in his career. If he's a starter this year, it means how poorly the Falcons O-line truly is.

I'd like to see more of Moore before labeling him a career backup. Hopefully he plays well enough that the staff wants Lehr and Moore in the lineup and puts McClure in a backup role. C and LG are the biggest eyesores IMO...
