Drew Davis injury could open the door for UDFAs

More reps for some of the other UDFAs my favorites thus far are Geraldo Boldewijn and Bernard Reedy.

The Falcons will be down a wide receiver at the start of training camp.

Reserve Drew Davis will begin camp on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing a “procedure” on his foot, the club said Saturday.

Coach Mike Smith said Davis is anticipated to miss “around six weeks,” according to a team-issued statement.

A third-year pro from Oregon, the 25-year-old Davis appeared in all 16 games for Atlanta in 2013, catching 12 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns. He also notched seven special teams tackles.

Davis’ injury was discovered at the conclusion of minicamp, Smith said.

Including Davis, the Falcons have 12 receivers, including special teams ace Courtney Roby, whom the club signed last week.

Given that when the Falcons say a guy will be out 6 weeks, it means that he'll be out 8 weeks at a minimum, this potentially puts a real damper on Davis' chances of making the roster.

Even if it's 6 weeks from today that means he misses the first 2 preseason games. And since the 3rd one is the dress rehearsal for the starters, that basically means he'll have to shine in the 4th game with T.J. Yates & Sean Renfree in order to make the team.

So yes, it will open the door for other guys. Although more than likely, if Davis gets cut, it'll be Roby taking his job.
