Here's hoping it's more like Reggie Wayne (3 yrs./$17.5M) than Brandon Marshall (3 yrs./$30M)

Falcons' Roddy White likely to get new deal by camp

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White had been expecting a new contract extension following the draft, but a life situation has delayed those negotiations for an undetermined period of time, according to two sources informed of the situation.

White's half-brother Tyrone Moore Jr. was shot on May 17, and neither the Falcons nor White's agents feels comfortable attempting to work out a deal so soon after Moore's death. The sides will let the mourning process play out.

The belief is a deal will be done by training camp, rather than this spring. The Falcons wanted to focus on free agency and the draft before turning their attention to their own players and their contracts.

White could be looking at a deal in the neighborhood of Brandon Marshall's new three-year, $30 million extension with the Chicago Bears. However, Marshall is two years younger, which might not bode well for White's overall value.

But White has something in his favor. While Marshall has been on three teams, Atlanta owner Arthur Blank sees White as a face of the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

If you compare White's 2011 and 2012 seasons (when he wasn't hampered by a variety of ailments) to Marshall's 2012 and 2013 campaigns, they stack up favorably. Like the Bears and Alshon Jeffery, the Falcons must also account for the mega-deal expected for Julio Jones, eventually.

Roddy has always made good contracts for himself.....

I expect at least 3 years, 25 million.

I expect Atlanta to pay Roddy for what he has done for the franchise and not what he can still do for the franchise.

Probably the biggest failing under the Blank era is paying players what they've done and not what they can still do. Blank is already on record about how important Roddy is to the franchise undermining negotiation talks and giving Roddy higher ground.

It doesn't matter how long the contract is for, he will be a cap casualty possibly as early as the start of 2015 season.

Heck Roddy's good!! No way he gets cut after next year unless its to let him have an 1,000 yard season with another team......

He makes those short catches against corners then goes another 5-10 yards......We know he was hurt last year but its easy to forget before that he's had 6- consecutive 1200 receiving yard seasons!! Few receivers in the league can match that!!

I like Roddy as well. But father time waits for no one. The fact of the matter is that White will turn 33 this season and 34 next. That's pretty old in wide receiver age. We need to get his replacement this of season.

Yes The age can be a big problem...... I feel the way I do is he learned a lot from Tony G. Its not his speed that makes him good; its he goes up against smaller corners just out muscles them for the ball then drags them a few more yards......

Should he get hurt again I'd say that's because of age, so yes age can be a problem from injuries; but not the smaller corners in my opinion.

We'll see, this year should tell a lot about Roddy!!

Problem with DB/WR positions is when age catches up to them their performance drops into no-mans-land territory pretty quick.

And it's not like Roddy has light wear on those wheels either. That tread is getting pretty low.
