Why do we waste mid-round picks on special teamers?

Seriously, why do we waste mid-round picks on people who we can't develop?

Yeah this was a reach in my opinion, this guy is an athlete, but not a football player, perhaps a few years from now he will be good.

Southward is a decent prospect. Is he going to be a star? No. But can he help out in the nickel/dime? Sure.

I don't love the pick, but it's not a waste. Southward can play in the NFL, whether he is good in the NFL is a different story.

After taking some time to digest the Southward pick... DIMITROFFED.

We could have taken him in the 4th, perhaps even in the 5th. There were some really good players available at our pick who could have competed immediately. Southward might be able to compete immediately, because we have no depth at safety. He also figures to be a very good special teamer. But I don't think that you draft special teamers in the top of the 3rd.

Yeah, hard to see how we couldn't have gone Mason in the 3rd, Norwood or Ellington in the 4th, Southward at 4th compensatory and gotten all 3 guys and been a better team.

Or Moncrief, X, Southward.

He may be fine, but he was taken in the top 70 players. There were good line players and good skill players who could get in immediate rotation there.

To be fair Pudge had Richard Sherman as a career special teamer  .

True, and it's why I don't get too judgmental about picks. I'll have an opinion about a guy, but I always wait and see because there's always that chance that the player you consider to be J.A.G. becomes the league's best cornerback. :drugged:

Apparently the staff was smitten with him, because he made the play of the week at the Senior Bowl.

Yea when's the last time we've had that happen?
