It would have been nice to have to decide between Matthews and Mack, but I can't really complain.

Added bonus of getting Sam Baker a little closer to off of the team.

And that boggles my mind, but that's why we have fun words like "boggle." I think you have one year left to enjoy his play, depending on what Holmes shows in camp.

Matthews is safe, and that's not bad.

I always 'love' it when we can draft this high and get the second best player at their position  We move up to 5th to grab Julio 'I'm always injured' Jones and Green, the drafts real #1 WR goes to the Bengals at 4. We then pick 6th and get the #2 Tackle... just blows my mind.

Matthews will be better than Robinson this year, and will be a solid if not elite starter for a long time. We just gave Matt more time to find Roddy and Julio. This pick makes us better now, and in the future, once again, love it.

I like Matthews, but I don't like that the 4 "best" tackles on Atl are all left tackles. I wonder what Oak asked for.

Mathews was a 3 year starter at RT? He can play any position on the line.

Fair point.

He's not my idea of the larger, grader-like RT. Who do they go over if they need a yard? Off to look at the tape again to see if it's him.

Yeah, watching him on tape I'd say he's lacking pop. He looks very, very good at mirroring speed rushers, but there's little in the immediate Youtube vids from '12 and '13 that says the he can push guys out of the way. I'd agree that he'll likely be better than the guys ATL trotted out there, but I don't think that the line got significantly tougher with Matthews.

Pass blocking looks good, though; he has very good awareness.

Do keep in mind, we passed on 70% of our offensive plays last year. This helps.

Well, considering that Baker can't stay healthy and is a average starter when he does actually play and our top option at RT is really a backup LT getting Matthews is freaking huge for this Falcon O-Line. The season will start with Matthews at RT but I suspect it won't take long before Baker goes down and Matthews shifts over to his real position in Atlanta at that is LT.

Hopefully Asamoah can hold the fort at RG and his benching was really mandated at KC. Add in Matthews and hopefully continued improvement from Mr. Beard aka. Joe Hawley can give us a full season with the production he showed at the end of last season we have at least an average offensive line.

If Atlanta can get a good pass rusher in the 2nd and lock down ASJ in the 3rd I'd be a happy man. If by some miracle Bishop Sankey slipped to the 4th I'd be in heaven.

Safety? Bucannon, Ward, C-D are gone already. And Pryor and Fuller.

But therein lies the problem: Who's the RT in that--likely--scenario?

Holmes. He and Schraeder will likely compete for the swing tackle position, with Holmes being the front runner given his experience and draft status. Johnson should now move back to guard where he can push Carimi and Gunn for the top backup duties and will likely be the 8th OL with Konz (or Hawley in the unlikely event he loses the starting C job) being the 7th active guy on game days.

I suspect Falcons will use a late-round pick on a rookie guard and/or center as well. So here's your depth chart at start of camp:

LT Sam Baker … Ryan Schraeder … Terren Jones
LG Justin Blalock … Gabe Carimi … Harland Gunn
C Joe Hawley … Peter Konz
RG Jon Asamoah … Mike Johnson … rookie?
RT Jake Matthews … Lamar Holmes

He better look far better at RT than he did last year. He blew assignments as a LT, but at least he had an idea of how to fall into pass protection on the left side.

If he can stay healthy, I ready for him to stay at LT.

The debate is really moot... Atlanta paid Baker big money to start at LT. He'll start at LT unless he has more injury issues and/or sub par play.

I still think Matthews is starting LT sooner rather than later.

Did we get our guy? The question seems to have been answered.

Quote:
Falcons almost traded up to #3 overall on Thursday. According to Peter King of SI’s MMQB. There was a trade discussed that would have had the Falcons trading away their third-round selection to flip spots with the Jaguars.

The most interesting aspect of this trade is that Atlanta was not targeting Khalil Mack. According to King, Atlanta coveted Jake Matthews. The Jags backed out of the deal because they were afraid someone would take Bortles (Browns or Raiders) before picking again at sixth.

How do you feel about Jake Matthews now Falcons’ fans?

Look when your dad and uncles were all outstanding in the NFL, and your suppose to go in the top 5 ---Yes we got our man.....!!

Their are no guarantees in the draft but some things are surer than others!!
